First winter. will 2 snow tires up front do?
Having only two defeats the purpose, but this'll start a debate back and forth so I'll just state my opinion. Two different tread patterns will make the front more stable than the rear, particularly in wet conditions or heavy amounts of slush. Personally I always go with 4.
you need wintertreads in the rear. the second you try and take a turn in the snow. you will find your ass end paaing you as it kicks out. with out snow tires in the rear you rear tires arent going to have any traction.
It wont work. You have to remember that you have summer tires that arent worth a **** if temperatures are below 40 degrees. Yes you might be able to get going but when you just driving around in the snow and people start brake checking your ass end will kick out. I drove my car for one winter on summer tires and it wasn't fun at all and I highly recommend that you buy 4 winter tires. You might to spend more now but it is probably cheaper than fixing your car because you didnt get 4.
I made it thru last winter with the stock Conti's just fine. And we had a horrible winter in Chicago, lots of snow. If you drive with a little extra caution, you'll be fine. That being said, x2 with all the above posts. Get all four if you can.
Getting only two snow tires is the most retarded thing you could possibly do. Running no snow tires (which is also stupid), at least you have equal traction on all four corners - traction loss is predictable.
With snow tires on the front, you're just going to accelerate faster into the inevitable accident you have when the rear unpredictably snap-steers the wrong way.
It is common knowledge that you never put the good tires in the front since you will lose the back end all the time. Check out articles from michelin and lots of other magasines that confirm this.
stock conti's in winter? that was freaking retarded.
If you have a RWD car you can get away with just snow tires on the back.
But if you have a FWD you really need them on all four corners or just in the back (which is not much help, but safe)
Snow tires up front with high performance summer tires would be DUMB.
Snow tires up front with good all season tires would be fine in most cases if you drive with care IMO.
I have three sets of tires, snows, all season, and high performance summers.
This gap in effectiveness will cause the SAME problem if you mount them on the back and winters on the front.
For your safety and the safety of those around you - please don't be cheap and go buy four winter tires, or at the VERY least, 4 all-season tires.
if your going to be a bum and only get 2, put them in the rear and not the front, atleast when your front tires are spinning you know it, the rear will only kick out and you will be doing donuts everytime you stop.
a few years ago i had bald tires in the back and just all seasons up front in my old celica. I was going around a corner at about 85 and the ass end swung out and i was all over the place. i thought i was gonna die. lol btw.. this was on dry pavement ... so less speed more snow = same results..
I went through last winter with four BFG G-Force SuperSport A/S tires. Based on that experience, there's NO WAY I would try two winters up front and the stock in the back.
I didn't have any real problems like getting stuck or anything but four decent tires are necessary. Your ESC is going to be working overtime.

my point was that as long as you don't drive like you would in ideal conditions thru a snowstorm you will be fine. i wasn't exactly taking corners at 35 mph in the snow with the conti's. if you feel the need to drive 15 mph faster thru the snow, by all means go out and buy some snow tires. if i absolutely HAVE to go somewhere in the snow, i'll take the extra 10 mins to get there for the time being til i have the extra money laying around for a set of winter tires. thanks for the great comment tho.
hahaha, yeah. natural selection bullet. overly dramatic much? OP - Ditch the continentals or you will die this winter. come on. really? did you miss the part when i said if he can, he should buy all 4 rather then the TWO he was considering doing in the first place?

I have ran snow tires on my Z-28's, my Saab 9-3, and now my SS. My Michelin Alpin3's came today. I've had the wonderful pleasure of driving in snow with max performance tires. It is just not worth it to me to try it anymore. Snow tires are truly amazing!
