Idk how often the cats go bad on the sstc, but are you buying this from a dealer? It's possible it has a catless downpipe on it, and they are putting a factory cat back on it, since it is technically illegal for them to sell it without one.

Catalytic converters in general can last a very long time if they never get fuel dumped into them. It's possible the car was shittily tuned and ran rich for a while. I'm leaning toward the previous owner removed the cats and like Tdubbs said, the dealer can't sell the car that way by law.

I agree with the likely cause however dealers can most certainly sell a car that's missing emissions components here in Washington.

My understanding is if they are selling the car to be driven on the road, it has to meet all federal requirements. Catalytic converters is one of those requirements.

I'll have to agree. At least here in Illinois a cat is required to legally sell the vehicle from a dealer. Now on the other hand, a private seller can do whatever they want, as long as they "disclose all" information regarding if the cat was removed. Most never tell you anything though.
