Engine Oil and Warranty?

I know the manual stipulates 5W-30 that meets GM 4718M, and GM released a list of approved oils:

http://www.gm.com/corporate/responsi...ngine_oils.pdf

Has anyone run into problems with the dealer when they don't use M1 5W-30? I was planning to use M1 0W-30, which happens to be on the list. I couldn't find Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 (Ferrari recommended oil) which isn't on the list, but hey - if it is good enough for a F430 Scuderia, it ought to be good enough for a LNF.

Dealers are now allowing the use of Castrol Syntec in all vehicles BUT the Corvette which call for synthetic, at least that's the case up here. If they found anything else I'm sure they'd try to pull a fast one, recall Marin's nightmare when his lifter shattered and they nittpicked everything from his air filter to his oil changes.

I remember that incident. Castrol Syntec is advertised as a synthetic but you're right, they're NOT on the 4781M list! Interesting.

Castrol Edge 5W-30 is on the list though. That is what I use.

Hmmm.
I've allowed my dealership to change my oil 3 times; once with M1, twice with Royal Purple 5w-30 that I supplied. Both times with the RP I've asked if there was any problem and was told no(either they haven't seen the list or don't care). Say what you will about RP-I haven't had any issues but if I do is it on them or me?
I suspected it wasn't on "the list"-may try to find the Amsoil next time around.

Castrol Edge 5w-30 for another oil change today. Maybe 'cause I work for BP.

5k miles and 47% life left but I change it anyway. The way I beat on the 'Balt it won't hurt.

Next time I'm at the dealer I'll look around. Maybe since I checked last they switched to Edge instead of Syntec.

I haven't been to Walmart recently, but they're supposed to be stocking Pennzoil Ultra. I'm hoping it drives the price of Platinum down. Since I go by the OLM, I don't see a point in running Ultra since I wouldn't be running it out to an oil change interval where it's worth the extra cost over Platinum. I'm guessing Ultra is the equivalent to Mobil 1 EP.

Pennzoil ultra is available at Wal-Mart for $28/5 qt. It's only available in 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30. I couldn't find the Ferrari 5W-40 or 10W-60.

I also saw Royal Purple at Wal-Mart for $8.50/qt.

Most of the Syntec series is more of a Group III oil instead of mostly PAO. The only exception in the Syntec line is the German Castrol Syntec (0W-30, will say "Made in Germany" on it).

Thumbs up Wally World has QS HP on sale - at least mine.

$ 18.00 for a 5 quart jug of Quaker State HorsePower - has the GM4718M spec right on the jug.

I am doing a change this weekend at roughly 47% OLM myself as it is black, smells funky, and it will probably make the cam phasers happy from what I have read here.

I used to run that German Castrol 0W-30. It wasn't anything special in my Ford 4.6L V8, but it did pour out green when it was new. I don't recall if it meets 4718M.

I used to run Quaker State Q Synth 5W-20 in the 4.6L 3V V8 in my Mustang - no complaints.

Oil prices have shot up significantly per quart except when you buy the large 5 qt jugs at Wal-Mart.

Mobil 1 hasn't really impressed me. M1 is notorious for making engines sound a lot noisier especially some of the LSx V8 engines and Ford engines. I still use it because it isn't too bad and is only a few bucks more than Pennzoil Platinum.

The Mobil1 cap is primarily just because GM and Mobil have a contract with one another.

BP has a contract with GM also. I get to participate in an employee discount program because of it. Castrol products are made by BP. Look close at the label on the back of any Castrol product.

Ford is supposed to have a contract with BP as well, hence the BP logos on the fuel caps for some of the MYs.

I'd imagine BP's contract is for the non performance vehicles.

Ouch! Maven posted that the LNF tranny fluid is Castrol Syntrans 75w-85.

They buy mainly Fords for the refinery vehicles afaik.

If you aren't thrilled with Mobil 1, then why not use Platinum? Never seen that it makes engines noisier, Mobil 1 hasn't shown to be any better, and it's cheaper.

I read another oil thread where guy's were using mobil 1 extended but oddly enough it does not have the 4718m rating like the mobil 1.

mobile 1 spec sheet.

I've never tried the Mobil 1 0W-30, so I'll give it a shot in the Cobalt.
I've been using the Pennzoil Platinum in my Ford V8s: 4.6L 2V, 5.4L 2V, and 4.6L 3V w/ great results.

The LS1 owners complained about ticking noises from the engine when using Mobil 1.
