K&N Intake for SS/TC

theres a metal clip that holds the cotton and wire filter part of the cone together into its shape. I use that as the hour hand.
I've been trying different things since that discovery of the most stable position being near 12:00.
I rotated it completely around (6:00) and I get extremes in STFTs. At partial throttle it spikes in the positive direction to something like +9.0 to +12.0. At cruise, it spikes to -8.0 to -6.0
The funny thing is they balance out depending on your driving to a LTFT of -1.5 to +3.2
I still feel having the bulge of the filter pointing upwards is better since I have yet to hit past 10.0 in the + or - direction. I wanna try a 9:00 position next to see what happens in this cold weather.
Its 32 to 35 degree F in the morning here in Maryland just for reference. Temperature is playing a role on the fuel trims.

You want the filter buldge facing upwards in the 12:00 direction (K&N logo will be upside down), fuel trims are very managable, leaning slightly in the negative direction. Partial acceleration rarely exceeds +6%
These are my experiences and should only be used for interpretation not definitive results for all Cobalt SS as each car maybe be slightly different.

How do you all know it's the way the filter I positioned instead of maybe a difference in how the intake tubing is positioned? I know there's not a whole lot of different ways to position the piping but maybe slight differences in position might be causing these issues.

BooYeah!!!!!
Just got one of these intakes from TTR for a smoking deal way better than ZZP's and OTTP's prices.

Now I'm going to have to sit the intake on my coffee table and just look at it until winter passes by and I can install it and have the car re tuned

+6 is pretty normal because all 4 K&N SRI cars I have tuned so far all ended up needing +5 to +7 changes to most areas of the MAF tables. They all started off at +2 to +3 LTFT and then as you start adjusting once you get done they end up at +6 to +7 changes mostly.

The K&N is honetly not that bad because for the most part it does not cause a ton of MAF turbulance especially for a short ram intake (A/F does not hunt much unless the stupid purge system is active). It still should be tuned for for optimum performance, drivability and durability.

So now that I'm ZZP tuned do you guys recommend I get this?
And I don't have a RPD unit either so how will I know my what it's doing to my engine?
Also what is an acceptable range for intakes

You won't know what it's doing unless you have either a gauge (Dashdaq, Dashhawk, Interceptor, RPD, etc.) or logging done.
The acceptable range is as close to 0 at all times as possible. The closer, the better. There's not really any other good way to address the question.

im sure its been said like 25 times but im not searching through this haha. so its basically a no go without a tune? i know without a tune i wont get the full potential out of it but i plan on putting it on and getting a tune in a few months. safe or no?

Yep ... like the guys above said, its safe. It's nice to have something that can read the fuel trims , IIRC you can kinda tweak the K&N to give you better trim's by rotating the filter a certain way . If the fuel trims get too bad it will set a code ( + or- 20 long term ) so atleast you will know instead of running around with the trims way out of wack.

Nice, so since it's okay with stock, I guess I can assume it'll be good with ZZP Tune. Especially since ZZP recommends AEM CAI and Downpipe with the tune

Well, I'll get it and I guess if I need to get it retuned I'll just do it, I'll have to send in the PCM back to ZZP and have them reflash it to support the intake.
