loud rear end rattle, clunk

IM getting a really bad rear end rattle/clunk. It sounds like suspension but i cannot replicate it by jouncing the suspension. I get it over moderate bumps.. If i drive my car for extended period of time it makes the noise even over the smallest bumps. I tried shaking the whole exhaust pipe also. I also tried opening the trunk while driving slow and it still did not go away. Its going to the dealer but im wondering if anyone had any similar problems with it and got it repaired.

i also quickly looked the bushings and they did not looked pulled out or anything

Lots of clunks in the cold weather here. I think it's the rear shocks &/or bushings.

If it has the spare tire, make sure it's tightly secured. I know it's an obvious point, but many times it's not seated flat.

dude I have the same exact freakin thing! drives me god damn bonkers and I can't locate where it's coming from. It sounds more like it's coming from inside the car than from outside to me though, and I notice it only happens when I hit a bump that is wide enough to effect both rear tires evenly as opposed to just one side or another. Sorry I don't have a suggestion for a repair, but I'm sorta glad someone else has experienced the same fantom sound I keep hearing.

yeah I actually tried taking the entire spare tire out, along with the trunk liner, and tightened the sub with no luck

the noise started in the fall before freezing tempatures.. Theres no way this is normal operation.. If so chevy has very bad quality control. My bushings looked ok.

^^This^^

At least on interiors, and fit and finish in general. I'm getting the same loud clunking noise coming from the rear, usually going over speed bumps on the campus parking lot.

I have the same problem and I live in AZ where it is 65* during the winter, so it is not the winter chill. It will happen specifically when I go around a turn or come to a sudden stop with the brakes, and it wont happen when I slowly downshift. I also notice it going over speed bumps. At first I thought a transmission mount was busted, but it hooks up at WOT. I was told by a local dealership, its the gas sloshing around in the tank and since I sit pretty much in the back seat when I drive, that is why it is more audible. Do I believe them? no, I think there is something else wrong. Did his explanation make sense? sorta.

It was so loud one time that I thought I was rear-ended.

Besides, its pretty embarrassing when you have someone else in the car...

Hope this helps.

i figured it out.. My driver side rear caliper has free play in it which is causing the rattle noise down the road.

hmm caliper? we are definitely hearing 2 very different things then. Mine sort of sounds like the rear seat is moving around back there or something if I hit a decent size bump or roll over a speed bump. I checked everything on the rear seat, so that's not the issue. It's just the best thing I could compare it to at this point...

my rear pads were not seated right and cause uneven wear so i got a rear brake job.. The rattle went away but i still get this crunching noise back there sometimes over decent bumps. The colder the worse it is

I don't have a solution but if it makes you guys feel better, my wife's Civic Si does this same thing in the cold weather. It's not just a Chevrolet-thing.

there are alot of noises in these cars. I will list mine.

1#. Rear brakes make a grinding noise at 5mph or slower when you press the brake lightly. lol.

2#. the dash trim makes a vibration noise at low idle rpm.

3#. The fan in the air vents makes a clicking noise at speeds 1 or 2. sounds like a baseball card hitting bicycle tire spokes.

4#. bushings/ suspension make noises that sound like either the bottom of the car is scraping or pounding a hooker on a squeeky bed as mentioned by alot of members here (weird) lol. I get both noises and they are both distinct.

5#. A loud clunk noise can sometimes be heard from the trunk area, might be the spare tire, not sure... but it happens randomly and it doesnt always occur on a large bump.

6#. a loud POP can be heard from the dash/windshield area every now and then, I think it might have to do with temperature fluctuation? no idea on that one. It sounds like a small rock hitting the windshield and it scares me everytime, lol.

7#. Transmission is pretty noisey in between shifts. First gear whines like a quiet firetruck. lol.

Anybody got any other noises to list?

Some have found the subwoofer screws to have been loose. Also do you have a clunking noice sometimes when you are just sitting still? Both my wife and I can't figure out what the noise could be while sitting perfectly still. Only thing I could think of is fuel sloshing around in the tank but its more like a popping instead of a banging. Kind of the the car is settling. Friggin weird.

that sounds like my point #6. a loud pop randomly will occur when nothing is happening that could cause it.

Sounds like you have leaves in there near the fan.

It's a rough commutator on the motor. I had the same issue on a Sunfire. Had to replace the motor, stoning the comm didn't even help it. Leaves. lol.

The strap holding down the battery in the trunk has a metal buckle where it tucks under the plastic piece at the inside rear of the trunk. My car at idle was causing a loud rattle throughout the cabin from knocking the buckle into the plastic repeatedly. Duct tape solved this problem, I haven't heard the loud clunk going over speed bumps since.

Rise from the dead!!!!

I have a loud pop that comes from what sounds like either the roof above my head or the rear seat. Whereas you all get it when its 20* out, im only seeing/hearing the noise when its over 100* right now. In the mornings i hear nothing but by 11am its pretty cosistent over bumps. At first i thought the shitty sunroof was doing it but the sound is definently from further back and it does it with the sunroof open or closed.
