The crappy part is, you can't test it without having it for a few days.

We have seen a half dozen cars dumped on the market with this issue, only to screw the new buyer.

This may not be the case here, but I'd be weary.
"several people" being the key word here. 95% of the porus blocks happened under 30k miles. when i had my porus block i went through 1.5 gallons of coolant in 2 days. trust me im sure he will know if anything was wrong.

i have 2 of my best friends who have 09 cobalt SS's. one is at 86K the other is at 115K neither of them have had any issues with their motors.

he said he added water to it and now its all good. seems to me like he knows what hes doing and looking for.

I am a pretty fart smeller. I was an auto-tech for about 6 years before I decided to do IT Worked for Toyota and Hyundai. I fix cars on the side for $$$, but leaning towards computers now because cars are a PITA when they arn't mine!

I will be watching my coolant like a hawk.

Your anecdotal 2 friends is not data. None of us have any idea how bad the problem was. GM hasn't and will never release that data, if they bothered to track it. You or I have absolutely no way of knowing when the problem is likely to occur.

The porous block issue is extremely variable. No two cars are going to show exactly the same symptoms regarding how much coolant is lost, when it starts, etc. You lost 1.5 gallons in two days, I lost a pint in 10 miles, Joe could have lost a cup in a week. My point is you have nothing to base the "95% happened under 30k miles" statement.

i know my 2 friends are not data but i was just using them as an example. i know there is nothing out there but most of the problems that i have seen on here were with lower miles. so im sorry for that statement.

Each i drove my car for those two days i would come out and see my tank was completely empty and that was just driving a little bit. so then i hopped on here and thats what everybody said it was and to check my oil. as soon as i checked my oil it was milky i knew it was toast.

this guy asked for our help and instantly the first thing said is "oh thats porus block" becuase you had to add a cup of water to your coolant. i would add water to mine periodically and that motor now has over 100k on it and no issues. hes got guys telling him yeah go get the car and now its guys saying stay away from it lol. me personally, as long as everything checks out when hes done doing everything to it, then its def a good buy.

True, it was quite alarmist to say that a top-off is porous block.

What is the build date? I have the infamous 09/08 with 72k miles on it. I have accepted the possibility of one day having to replace the engine in this car.

In seriously rough shape, way too many miles for the price and from the sounds of things, it's going to need some serious TLC

BB is $4500 for fair shape. *Shrug*. I really loved the blue. It runs perfect and he's the only owner plus he kept maintenance records. I'd be driving my wagon for months waiting for the perfect SS Sedan . I will save this one!!!

Get those wheels sanded down and powder coated and you won't see the curb rash or just get new ones haha. Engine will be easy to clean. Interior you can do that then and as far as the outside of you know how to wet sand, buff with compound then wax you'll be amazed at what it can do. One trick is when you go to wash it if the scratches disappear then that means they can be wet sanded or buffed out 👍🏼 I have faith in you lol

140k with no issues is netter than a lot of other engines. My friends 14 sti had rod knock at 10k miles hahahaha.
