Saw it a Wally World the other day for $28.00/5 qts.
I think I will try it in the Camaro first - it's about due for a change.
Funny, though - you show that it meets GM4718M , but I swear I could not find that anywhere on the jug I was looking at whereas Mobil 1, QS HP, & Pennz Platinum clearly state it.
Early container, maybe ?
I'll keep looking when I go for the Camaro's oil.
Keep us posted !

I'm on PP right now, and I'm going to switch to Ultra on the next change. I didn't know if the PU was any good when I was picking up my first oil for this car, but I knew PP tests better than M1 for UOA. After reading a bunch of threads about PU on bobistheoilguy, I decided that I'll switch on my second oil change. Even with as much driving as I do, it takes a long damn time to hit 25% on the computer.

For anyone that is interested there is a UOA of Mobil 1 5W-30 that some one was kind enough to post up on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...1961455&page=1

M1 has been showing HIGHER IRON content in UOAs. I believe our CAM shafts are IRON? Also this product is supposed to keep the parts in *like new* condition as far as being clean. Ferrari puts the Euro version (5W40) in their new cars now.

As far as PP..it's good stuff, so just finish that off. It seem reasonable to replace at 25%, but I'm going to replace @ 5K mi. no matter what the % is.

Not knocking RP..don't know too much about it.
Just that you're *dealing* with this fact using it>>>
Here is what GM recommends straight from the owners manual:
Engine Oil (2.0L L4 engine)
The engine requires a special engine oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting this standard can be identified with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. However, not all synthetic API oils with the starburst symbol will meet this GM standard. Look for and use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM4718M.
Not only does RP not have GM4718M, the 5W20/30 and 10W30 are not API SM but the older SL.
For all automotive engines currently in use. Introduced in 2004, SM oils are designed to provide
improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection, better wear protection, and better
low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. Some SM oils may also meet the latest ILSAC
specification and/or qualify as Energy Conserving.

ROYAL PURPLE 5W-20 SL* August 8, 2010
ROYAL PURPLE 5W-30 SL* August 8, 2010
ROYAL PURPLE 10W-30 SL* August 8, 2010
So it begs the question...why hasn't RP gone ahead with these certs?
Yeah...I know...It's a *money* thing...pay $$ to test and get certification.
But if you're going to spend $$ for a premium oil, why not get one with the certs that comply with the ( statement in manual) warranty requirements?

Found this thread on RP...
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/archive.../t-128648.html
FROM RP:
"To be able to list the GM 4718M on the container, GM requires that the oil be the latest API service classification, currently the SM. RP has decided not to switch from the SL to SM formulations in the 5W20, 5W30 and 10W30 oil grades as the SM requires a reduced antiwear package and we do not feel it provides as good a wear protection as our current product.
So it's a catch 22, we have the performance and exceed the requirements except for the API SM license"
Now, read this reply from a poster:
API SM oils have twice the oxidation protection of API SL oils and improve on the anti-wear performance. JUST because the phosphorous level was lowered, supplemental anti-wear agents were used to improve wear performance to lower levels than API SL. Just wanted to clear that up.

It's Mobil1, champ. What is it that you think you're going to improve with another oil? Has Mobil1 not been proven to be a good enough oil for your raging Cobalt SS with a whopping 300HP?

I have nothing against Mobil 1 tough guy. I personally don't use it BUT that wasn't the point I was making. My comment was in response to your ignorant and short-sighted little statement "Nobody keeps a car for more than 3 years anymore. Who give a s@#$ about oil?". That's all...

Any oil meeting the GM4718M spec ought to be good enough by definition. I'm just not real happy about the elevated Fe numbers that we're seeing from M1. I'm confident that its not a big deal and I've been using M1 for years without issue, but if there's something out there that gives us better UOA's then its worth considering IMO.

ILSAC GF-4.
Mobil 1 is the same rating there for pretty much the same product just a different NAME but I have seen some updates about royal purple being a GF - 5 but really?

I'm also banking on this new *clean* technology..hoping that will help with the * intake valve deposit* issue on our DI cars. BTW, once the Euro version 5W40 comes out, I'm gonna jump on it.

Did an oil change with Pennzoil Ultra yesterday...
Immediately the engine seemed smoother in both sound and a bit in driveability. I thought it was all a placebo, but before, my engine had been knocking a lot recently (sometimes even at stupid times, such as from stops or at low-med partial throttle at low speed)... after the change, hasn't registered knock once. Interesting.
I'll keep an eye on it to see if it's just the fact that it's got new oil in it, or if it's the oil itself.
Just wanted to chime in on my real-world findings.
