Sometimes, innovation pays.
With TWM's recent release of the shift extender, I was ripe with envy, and I wanted one badly. Not only being short on the money right now, I was skeptical of how this would work with the reverse lockout, and JUST how long the throws would be. But, there is only one way ti find out.
I somehow resisted the urge to just order one up, I got my brain to thinking. I have always been handy, and have a decently mechanically minded brain, so I decided to make one.
So, I went to the hardware store today, bought a fine threaded 3/4" nut, and a matching bolt, and went to town. the original idea was to weld the bolt in one end of a pipe, and the nut in the other end, to make the extender. Well, on the drive home, I got to thinking, and just screwed the nut on half way and the bolt on half way to make this:
Mind you, that was put together in half a second, driving down the highway, lol. So, once I got home, I fired up the angle grinder, and cut off the head of the bolt to make a stud (since the hardware store didn't have one). If i would have had a die, I would have used it to make the threads straight again, but I didn't, so I just tightened the bolt on the length of the stud, to straighten them out. Once again, I left the stud threaded in the nut halfway, and threaded the other half of the nut onto the shifter. Screwed the shift knob onto the other end and, voila! I got this now:
Now, initial driving impressions are that I would not want to drive with it all the time. The throws are long, and the reverse lockout is a PITA to work. BUT, if i were to do any AutoX or Time attack, I might use it. The beauty of this is, that when I wanna drive it on the street, I can take the adapter off, and run the regular short throw, and when I wanna work it on the track, I can put it on.
Oh, and it cost me $2.68.

Its for AutoX and time Trial. TWM claims it lets your hand be a bit closer to the steering wheel, while true in 1-2-3 shifts, is untrue on the 4-5 shifts. This was simply an experiment, looking to see if an extender would be beneficial to me, in my driving style. I believe the true potential could be unlocked with a different shifter altogether, something with a different ratio of "above the ball, to below the ball" shifter.
That said, I may be working something up in the near future, posed at road racers and AutoX racers.
