balancing shaft timing mark question

I'm putting in a balancing shaft/water pump chain. I lined up the the timing marks, and turned the engine over to make sure the markers would come back to the right spot. I turned it 3 full rotations of the chain, and each timing marker was off by 1 chain link. I turned it 3 more full rotations, and the markers where off by 2 chain links. Is this the way the balancing shaft chain is designed to work on these cars?

link colors are for initial timing, they wont line up after many revolutions.

As long as you have the marks lined up when you set it up your fine the gears are different sizes so it will not line up if you rotate the engine

Thanks. I'm used to dealing with a timing belt with only a drive, and one cam so when you rotate it a few time it syncs up again.

those marks are on the cam gear and crank gear, not the belt itself, you could mark the balance shaft gear and put a mark just behind it, rotate and make sure they line up, cant be to careful when timing.
