Best recommendation for simple tune for non enthusiast?

Hey guys,

Ran into an older guy with an auto HHR SS yesterday and scared the **** out of him with my car! Since auto's stock tune is 235hp.... He said what do I have to do!

He's older, not the type to seek out a tuner or mod the car. So what is the best option for an easy plug and play tune on a stock vehicle (will recommend a downpipe but he probably wont)

I was thinking ZZP PCM maybe? Don't think hed be the type to seek out a tuner.

Thanks

But in terms of how would you get it? Then you need 3 bar maps? I think a 22PSI ZZP ECM would probably be the easiest since it is tweaked better than GM with HPtuners. Am I right?

GMS1 tune hands down the best option.

19212670 Cobalt, Solstice, HHR Stage Kit 19212670

Just get the kit and go to a dealer, or someone with a tech 2.

GMS1 is the only canned tune I would run. Otherwise I would go for a custom hptune. The older guy would probably prefer a dealer doing it anyways.

I'd recommend the ZZP. More power than gms1 but still conservative on the timing. I'd still tell him to get an interceptor regardless of what tune he gets

I'm old, and I'm rocking full boltons, ko4+ and e47. Had faster cars most my life though. Agree that the gms kit will be fun for him over stock and won't be a hassle if he needs the dealer to work on it. Make sure he gets the premade splice kit for the maps, easy install and no worries.

Getting rid of the auto and making it a manual. You can't even hit 300 with bolt ons with an auto hhr

I doubt he wants to spend that much for a stick, just wants a little more fun.

stock turbo E85, 1.6 60ft runs a 12.3

3300lbs Auto HHR
LS brake swap 15'' light enkeis/slicks
ZERO ramp (obviously) crazy 2nd gear overboost (forget what he said the PSI was)
2600rpm Boost launch
112 trap speed

Only performance mods were intake, punched out second cat and 3" exhaust.

This info is not very accurate The car you are talking about is owned by a older guy named dave. First, that dyno graph is NOT Dave's. It's a graph of another auto HHR with a similar tune. Second, he runs e47 not e85. Third, he has never hit 1.6 60', he does consistent 1.7s on m&H slicks. Fourth, his highest trap speed is 111.xx. His car, my car, and a handful of others are proof that boosting 25+ psi is NOT useless and also proof that boost ramp kills et. But obviously compromising turbo and trans longevity.

Furthermore, I would recommend the GMTU to this non-enthusiast. NOT GM stage 1 since there is no such thing for the LNF

they are the same thing, just easier to call it gms1. For simplicity Id recommend the gm tune.
cost a lil more and wont be as much power as custom but unless they have decent knowledge of the car id stick to simple gms1 with some good bolt ons maybe. That way if any work needs to be done they can take it to the dealer and not worry as much.

f custom. If you drive year round and go too aggressive on the custom tune you will run like @#$@# in the winter vs summer etc. gms1 is a great tune all year round, no f'ing with ****. just put 91 or higher in and have a blast. Also as an old guy, unless they are super into it, it isn't worth having to deal with the BS of retuning etc. especially if it is a DD.

I've noticed you always seem to make these broad sweeping statements with seemingly no evidence to back them up.

Any tune should be fine custom, zzp or gms1(GMTU as some mentioned)

dude you live in texas the weather is always warm. Try Minnesota where it goes from 100 summer to -40 winter. That tune wouldn't work.

Are you including wind chill with that? If not, thats cold as hell. Weve seen -30 with windchill here in MI. Nothing works at that point. The starter on my jeep froze last winter.
