Pull the inspection plug in the side of the head, by the motor mount. Make sure that bolt isn't broken. If it is, get a repair bolt for that from Mongo.

If it's not broken, order an entire timing kit, replace everything with NEW bolts. I'm seeing them all the time on higher mileage ecotecs, the tensioners get weak and allow the chain to float and it beats the guides into pieces.

New timing kit and tensioner, CED has good prices on them.

The gears can wear, but if you're already in there, what's the big deal about changing the gears? It's one bolt. If the kit includes them, change them.

..

Don't forget to replace the cam gear bolts as well. They're torque to yield ( one time use ).

Rock auto stuff is fine as long as you choose something name brand. The cheapo aftermarket tensioners I wouldn't trust too much, but the chain and stuff, in a stock car, is whatever. If you're in an LSJ or LNF and you wanna abuse the car, then go back OEM. I had a good quality aftermarket chain come apart in a built QR25 I did for a friend and it almost cost us the engine. Not worth it in a highly abusive situation.
