05ss/sc vs 06 ss/sc any differences/pros/cons?
Hey guys,
well, i'm a gm guy. Have had my 95 2.2l cavy for 11 yrs and its still going strong (with 2k+wiring, 2.4l motor and s/c kit now). But i'm still keeping my eye open for a new ride. I race with atwilson since his redline was stock. Up untill he bought slicks.. we were always very close in times. But still way more potential with the 2.0 sc setup. Anyhow, i know i want a cobalt ss/sc. But is there any differences between between the 05's and 06's? Any performance or tuning differences/pro or cons. I plan to get HPT for my 2.4l ld9 to tinker with gms modest timing on the gm flash, and as i understand hpt can be used on the 2.0 s/c pcms. Correct? Cause i know they can't be used on the 2.2l eco s/c reflash (well, not yet).
So ya, is there any differences other then sticker price of new vs 1 yr old Also, is the recardo interior worth the 1-2gs vs the other leather interior?
Thanks guys!
Nate

i am a 2.4 guy but and i dont know too much about the ss.sc but the 05s i heard had little problems (i.e poor air conditioning or something - nothing major)
other then that i think performance wise they are identical

they are identical , and in my personal opinion recaros and lsd isnt worth the 1500 it cost.
I mean its a good deal, but the stock leather seats are nice and lsd isnt gonna make a difference when drag racing...
the 1500 could be spent on a intense or gm stage kit + other mods.
with 1500 you could get intense stage 5 + gmpp exhaust and put yourself well over 300hp at the crank.

06' have different engine mounts from what I've read, and I'm not sure about the 06's, but the 05's are notorious for having the sunroof break more than once (it jumps out of the sliders it rides on, and/or the power button for it falls out).
There are probably a couple other things, but I'd put my money on an 06, unless you can get an incredible deal on an 05.

I got my G85 for the price of 21,000 all because of a stripped "Cobalt" logo in the rear where it says SS.....that's all...and they lowered it to the price of a regular SS/SC....w/o the G85...pretty good deal huh. So nowhere on my car does it say Cobalt at all....just SS and Supercharged.

The Recaro seats are not only gorgeous, they're also very comfortable. I also think they'll handle the passage of time better than the all-leather stockers. For me, the package would be worth it for the seats alone. The LSD is probably essential if you plan on doing any competitive driving other than drag. And if anybody actually paid 1,500 for the G85 package, I'd be surprised. That's the MSRP for the package, and everybody knows you don't pay MSRP at a dealership...

I have both an 05 Redline with Recaro Seats but without the LSD and the 06 SS/SC with the Recaro Seats and LSD. I like the traction and feel of the SS/SC over the Redline hands down. The Redline with scamper for traction and pull side to side where as the SS/SC will just bite and set you back in your seat. The Option is well worth the cost!

nate - if you're looking at the cobalts you absolutely gotta get the lsd and the seats, you'll totally kick yourself if you don't......
(and imho, you got another little one on the way so get a Redline, the quad doors make family days a million times easier!! lol)

LSD HELPS when drag racing. /end discussion
The $1500 is spread out usually through 3-5 years, so it is not like if he doesn't get G85 he automatically has an extra 1500 for mods. So in reality, there is zero reason not to get the G85 package, unless you hate the seats or don't want to perform the BEST!
Also most of the '05s have/had a lot more problems compared to the '06s. Like someone else said, there are some ECU differences between the two years.
Good luck

Wow. Some good responces. I like this board, its not over populated like jbo.
K. So basically 06 has all the bugs fixed, and get the LSD. Main goal is daily driver that runs at the track (same as now). Prolly won't happen for a good bit yet, cause the cavy is going strong and only 80k km on 2k1 2.4l engine (240k km on body). So its still new. But I always have my eyes open if i find one
Thanks for the compliments Andrew. I hope to keep u on ur toes even more this friday. Put in the new koni yellows, and man, no comparison vs the koni reds at 6+yrs old. Drives like new. Also the poly c-arm mounts i put in today. So hopefull some better then those 2.2x 60fts.
Thanks. And no it wasnt. I started it as a simple swap, till i looked at the pin out and was like awww fck. Went baack to wrecker and stripped car of ALL wiring and gas tank and pump. Then when i went to put motor/tranny in, i realized the mounts were 7" too close together. So i welded in new getrag tranny mount brackets. And voila, 95 2.2l vin and insurace costs with a 2001 2.4l (now s/c. Getting reflash with 01 vin was hard with retarded gm tech) cavy with 0b2 wiring. Have a ton of pics of swap in progress.
