2005 Cobalt SS shuts off while driving

I was driving my car today and my car shut off twice while driving. There are no engine codes. I was pulling into a gas station and it died (radio still worked) and the other time I was doing 80mph on the freeway and it died. I have no idea what is happening to it. it has about 40,000 miles on it. Anyone have this problem too? also it has been raining alot (michigan) but the car doesnt appear to be wet in vital areas.

LOL I used to have the same problem on my black 2005 cobalt ss. It ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. Once I replaced that problem never came back.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. As far as coolant temp my car runs between 180-185 degrees. I drove the car around yesterday and today and it did not shut off. Im starting to think maybe it was from all of the rain we had here? it rained like 4-5 inches in two days but I did not drive through puddles. If it was the crankshaft position sensor would the check engine light come on? I might replace it for the hell of it considering they arent expensive

Mine did it once over a year ago. I cane to the conclusion that I hit the key with my knee.

that seems like that could be an option, I usually put my knee in that area while I use cruise control =P

That's exactly what I do. That's why I came to that conclusion.

I've seen one or two of the early cars have problems with the key turning off, either from a weak cyl or too much stuff hanging off the key, but a buddy of mine had his shut off when he hit a bump on more than one occasion with nothing but a single key in the switch, had to be some sort of internal fault in the keyswitch.

I replaced the crank position sensor on my '06 after it died on me a couple times, solved the problem. If you ever go to restart it and it won't auto-crank for more than a couple seconds, it's that sensor. Mine started right back up while rolling the first time, and after a couple minutes the second time. Third time, it quit and I had to have it towed home. It did start up fine right before I changed the sensor, but I did it anyway to be safe, not an expensive or hard fix at all.

Oil pressure?

Crank or cam sensor?

Key switch assembly?

Wiring harness short?

I once had a DSM that shut down because of carbon in the tb.

No ****, Sherlock.

I was just pointing out the fact that I've seen excessive carbon shut down an engine by hindering the idle circuit.

Why does every post you make on these boards have to be so arrogant and one-sided? Why you so butthurt?
