Corvette killer, Cobalt SS\SC UPDATE

As many of you know I am undertaking a major build on my engine. Today after working out a deal with JBP, I have upped the anti a bit for the build to ensure that this is one strong and capable LSJ capable of pushing 550hp with the addition of turbo\nitrious somewhere down the line. The following is a list of the work JBP will start once I ship my engine to them in 2.5 weeks. On top of this list will be the clutch, flywheel, custom drive shafts and drag radials needed to bear this kind of power. I should likely plan for a new tranny after I recover from the wife's beating that I am going to receive when she finds out what I said yes to

2.0L LSJ ECOTEC - ~550HP Build(this will only allow my engine to handle 550hp so that once other options are ready I am good to go)

you could save some money by buying a vette andbolting a procharger on it... then you could say the cobalt corvette killer, killer... and you'd be riding around in a vette, not a cobalt

A bit more and someday I will be brave enough to tell my wife the actual cost which with taxes will be 8k+.

And a 1960-70 anything is? I love my Cobalt and I am never selling it and when this one is too costly (old) to be a daily driver I will buy another one or at least I will get another one the last year GM makes them. No fast car is worth the kind of money people pay for them. I loved the Cobalt the first time I saw a picture and even more when I picked it up. My house is paid, my kids grown and I am close to dept free so Corvettes here I come.
As for my Alberta brethern (I am originally from Edmonton) when I am out there in July I will let you know when I will be there and hopefully I can make a meet or two with you guys.

Vette's up here are are $75,000+. No way can I justify that cost. When I started looking, before the Cobalt, I looked at either the Celica GTS or Mustang GT. Up here both are about 35k fully loaded. The GTS sucks for power and the GT sucks gas all the time. By doing this I still have a car I love for close to the price of both the loaded GTS and GT. And as I mentioned I am just slightly insane, but I can admit that
And also in a vette everyone expects me to very fast. In a Cobalt no one expects me to do what I expect this car to do, make Corvette owners cry. Can't you see the looks on their faces? Priceless.

I didn't see stronger axles. Make sure you have someone making stronger axles for you. Fast06SS broke one and he was only running high 12's. Good luck on your build, and I want to see dyno numbers and track times when your finished. You are getting HP Tuners, right?

Half the list was stock components that I guess your going to replace. Most of it is a waste. You should just make sure you have forged internals, ported head, larger blower or turbo, and typical boltons and tranny work.

Maybe you can cut that list down to aftermarket performance parts.

Yes to HP Tuners, and the drive shafts are in the works from the Driveshaft Shop.

Some of these parts are relatively inexpensive and if the shop would rather use new I will go with their recommendations. JBP has a vested interest in this build as their reputation is on the line. Some other parts are actually being changed for stronger ones. For instance the head bolts are all being enlarged for increased clamping. I am not a mechanic\machinist which is why I get the pro's to do the work. Having said that I will re&re the engine because that I can do.

Man, that is going to be one awesome SS. I can't wait to see dyno number and track times when it is finished.

Sounds good. Hope it works out for you.

As for your 550 hp prediction? Sure the engine may be able to handle it. I just don't think your going to get it with the stock blower. It will be interesting to see when it is finished though.

I am not predicting those #'s. It is what the engine will safely handle when I throw a turbo and or nitrous on top of this build. One of the cool things is that the combustion chambers & valve heads will be ceramic coated so as to prevent heat soak allowing for the future mods. There will be some serious gains done through this build but part of this process is to be prepared for even more power once a twin charge system is released

The list posted is a great bunch of parts who will allow you to safely supporting big power, but will not make power by themself (exept for the cams, stage head ...).

So tell us which turbo / twincharge setup you plan to run; you'll need a bunch of CFM and PSI to achieve 500 HP on a 2.0 liter engine !

Also, how about the intake, TB, header, cat, catback ???

Come on jmc007 you know that a kit is not out yet and as such the questions you ask can't be answered today. Just like 3 weeks ago I couldn't tell you how I was going to tune my engine after the build. I am going where no one has gone yet and while I get a awesome Cobalt (or just a bunch of flying shrapnel) everyone will have a few more answers and options when my build is done.
As I have stated this build is preparing for the future. I see no reason to do a job twice. This build will allow what ever is released for the LSJ in the way of a twin charging system. Because that is not likely to happen before the build is done I am over building at this time. At the same time my engine would be capable of handling a 150 shot of nitrous until the twin charging is available. Now, I am not saying that I am going to run a 150 shot just that I could if I wanted to. I like the idea of getting this build done so I can enjoy and adjust to the wild power I will have. Then I can see what is available and build up some reserve cash to fund both the next step as well as the price of gas

Any speculation on the hp/tq without the nitrious or turbo? What pully size will you use?

Damn I forgot about a smaller pulley. I was hoping to go with the 2.8 but I was hoping SFPH was going to make one to fit the stage 2 hub. I will have to check this out tomorrow with JBP. Wouldn't that be a kick in the head if I need to change both the pulley\hub and injectors again? I realize that as I get into this there are lots of little things that need to be remembered to make this a smooth process. Thanks BoomInIt

If it were me, I'd go with a 2.5" pulley untill a turbo/twincharge kit comes out.

I would suggest a machined snout along with a 2.6" pulley, a bigger idler pulley or an adjustable tenisonner arm along with some Siemens Mototron high impedance 60 lb/hr injectors.

Yes every single penney spent on your GM Stage 2 will probably be blown soon (GM calibration, GM hub and 42 lb/hr injectors).

not only do i love the fact that you're doing this, but i love the approach you're taking to building an engine. I see too many people today just slap big turbos or blowers on and then wonder why they blow their motors up. This is basically the approach i plan to take (on a much smaller scale) for my "little base model that could" project. That when when a nice turbo kit does come out i can slap it on and know my motor's ready for it.

Excellent work, please keep me updated on how this works out.

I will talk to JBP and see where we should go with relation to machining the snout, pully size, injector and possibly porting the S\C.

We would agree then that somethings are not worth gambling on and several grand on an engine is one of them. I will post on the progress and results as they happen. Good luck with building yours when the parts are released

Agreed dump the stage 2 and upgrade to Jmc007's suggestion. You could use the smaller gm belt though! If your building for high hp than gm stage 2 is obsolete.

The cost isn't bad overall. Still cheaper than buying a stock evo, sti, cobra etc. Just seems like alot when its not spread over 5 years

I agree with you totally. Now the part about over 5 years I am sure I will be paying for longer than that when I finally tell my wife what this is really costing. I am lucky that she is a great understanding wife
