Exclamation Crack in Catalytic Converter!!!

Okay, so I dont know much about warranty info or anything like that but as stated I have a crack in my front catalytic converter.... My local shop told me it should be covered by federal 8 year, 80 thousand mile warranty... So I took it to my local chevy dealer, Balise Chevrolet in Warwick, RI and schedule an appointment. Figured I'd get the power steering re-call taken care of in the process.

So I go there today and they say no, the cat is not covered, and Im like wtf... So they then ask if I got the extended warranty, I say I never got anything in the mail... It's a 2006 SS/SC btw and I bought it in May of 2010 with 13k miles, it now has 33k miles. The car was originally bought in August of '07. Then he proceeds to keep typing on the computer and asks if Im waiting or staying and I say I'll wait he gives me the service paper to sign and I give him the keys.

I've only had experience with a stealership once and it was ridiculously horrible and very close to being illegal, so Im sitting in the waiting room now and my question is, can I fight this? Is it covered under the 80k mile warranty? What can I do seeing as this could be very expensive on my end and I really dont have the money....

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

It IS covered by the emissions warranty absolutely. Should say so in your owner's manual.

The cat is covered. You should have received a letter in the mail. GM recently increased the cat warranty to 10 years 100,000 or 120,000 miles (i cant remember the exact mileage). Tell the bozos at the dealership to replace it. Thank god the guys at my dealership arent like that.

TBH I have no idea about that, never heard of an 8year / 80,000 mile federally enforced exhaust warranty. I do know that aftermarket downpipes (including the cat) can he had for less than 200 used or around ~200 new. Free to install your self or I would bet a local would help out - maybe sweeten the deal with pizza or something lol.

EDIT: 'Spose I didn't hear of it because I don't own an lsj and never got that notice haha. Def make them do it for free! I would have voted aftermarket though. GL.

I just looked in the owner's manual online and it doesn't have the warranty in there but YES it is covered. If the dealership refuses to do it, call GM customer service directly.

Federal Emissions Warranty
The Federal Emissions Warranty guidelines are based on federal regulations and apply to vehicles in all 50 states. Vehicles are covered by two types of emissions control system warranty, "Emission Defect Warranty" and "Emissions Performance Warranty".

The Emissions Performance Warranty is usually for 3 years/50,000 miles and depends on the state where you live. The Defect Warranty is generally consistent with the manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty with certain parts (catalytic converter and electronic emissions controls (PCM) for up to 8 years/80,000 miles. Please refer to your owner's manual for specific information on your emissions warranty.

It would fall under the 2nd part - the Defect Warranty. It's at least 8 years/80,000 but I think it was extended to 10 years/100,000 for 2006 and newer.

BTW that warranty is NOT up to the manufacturer's discretion....it's Federal LAW.

If they still refuse to honor the warranty:

For further information or to report violations of the emission control systems warranties, you may contact the EPA at:

That's powertrain. Emissions is a separate and more limited warranty. It's at LEAST 8yrs/80k.

Were you looking for brand spanky? Or used? I havent seen any on the lot, theres a lot of cobalts but no SS's. But if youre looking for brand new I dont think theres any even remotely close to us, there was a thread up saying 13 or so left? Not sure but all in like california and stuff. Could have it shipped if you really wanted to.

Anyways Chevy Customer Service said the dealer was still, "diagnosing the problem" haha, so customer service said they would give the dealer a call back tomorrow and then call me and let me know everything. So Im pretty pumped haha.

Anyways thanks for all the help, especially AlleyCat, sorry if I seemed completely clueless, I just want to make sure they dont try to wiggle their way out of this.

Yes, it was extended.

People with the extended warranty should have received a letter in the mail. If you have the letter bring it with you to the dealership. If not, contact GM.
