custom short ram intake idea

i dont know if this would work, but it seemed like it made sense, you take the collant tank and move it to the left of the engine bay where there is more room, then remove pipiing and attach a new filter in the space where the collant tank used to be, i am really not to smart about engines so i don't know if this would screw up the flow of coolant. I figured if it works it would be an easy cheap way to get a short ram intake, i would do the airbox mod for cai, but i don't want to risk sucking up water when its rainy. so , any advice orsuggestions would be greatly aprecciated, once again i really don't know to much so sorry if i sound stupid.

some badly edited pics for idea:

wouldnt work. with the stock and a quality aftermarket cai the maf is placed where it is for optimal performance. FYI you will be fine with a cai as long as you avoid driving through 2 feet of water

it could work but it would cost more to do it that way.... just get a CAI.

yes it would work, and a guy on the forums that i know here in town has already done it. he has a custom hood and a short intake JUST like that. in order to do that tho you need to move the coolant burp tank to the other shock tower. its sounds pretty wicked. might create some codes tho. he uses the stock intake piping and uses the stock MAF sensor.

if iget the ecu reflashed, will it fix the syuff w/ the maf and it cuasing codes and stuff. also, im 17 and just got the car a while ago, my parents (they both drive large slow suv's) already think this is too fast, (bs) i really cant convince them to let me order a cai cause i have no credit card which means i need to ask them before i can order an intake online. I figure this way i can find a drop in filter somewere for cheap and get this done at a friends house or something w/out telling them

it will work... you just got to use your imagination and keep the stock maf sensor off the stock airbox ...

well, thanks alot guys, i guess i still need a way to order the intake w/out my parents figuring it out, or ill just have to wait until they let me get one,

another possibility would be to get the xtc front mount intake from cobalt addiction. even though its supposed to mount in the bumper i plan on getting a front mount intercooler there sometime, i think it would fit behind the grill, and its cheap, 140 shiped

your idea wouldnt really work since the idea is to the the intake AWAY from the engine. just get a CAI, it actually does improve MPG.

WOW the 'balt on ebay is soo nice, the hood is unreal!! anyone know where to jsut get the hood?

Just kididng, that is actually the dumbest idea ive seen. the ******* hood scoop looks like a ******* pig snout, and hte " red carbon fiber" interior trim doesnt even match the red of the car. stupid person who did that deserves to be shot.

if you look at xtc's front mount it is realy like an intercooler, the filter is located across the front, so if i put it in the grill then all of the intake air will be coming into the intake through the grill. look at the intake at cobalt addiction.that will give you a better idea of what i was saying, although the intake is close to the motor, all of the the air would be coming from outside, through the grill

Why get hot engine air when you already get cold air from the wheel well.

i personally say we do a national search for the moron that did that to that SS. i feel so sorry for that cobalt, it makes me want to cry.

but anywho, i agree with everyone else man. save your time and money and get a manufactured cai. i personally recommend the K&N, but that's me.

yea, i just took of the bottom of the airboxlid and i put a huge filter there, i got the filter from pepboys , it is huge and actually pushes theplastic part below the airbox downi put most of the screws back and in the end and in the end it makes sort of a scoop to the filter, i can definitly feel the difference, also i think my dad is cool w/ some mods, next:exhaust and springs
i loove the supercharger whine, i can actually hear it now, it is awesome

i might just leave this , or get an actual intake later once i start doing some serious tuning

First off anomalous nice hood.

Second, I own HPTuners and have been tuning cobalts for over a year, while monitoring my IAT 1 and 2, 1 is at the maf sensor and 2 is after the aftercooler, and basically it really doesn't matter what temp the air is coming in at the filter, as long as your aftercooler can keep up the intake temps will be the same after the after cooler. When the supercharger compresses air it generates alot of heat, alot more then the difference of being a CAI and a SRI, and the Aftercooler still can keep up so, basically my point is that it really isn't a huge matter of the temperature. And if you really must I beat 2 cobalts with 2.7 and 60's in there car, and mine is a 2.7 with 42's that are way over on IDC.

So to sum it up yea here's a couple pics lol. BTW I did this cause it cost me a total of maybe 50$ while a CAI are 300... My car is all homemade custom work saves on money. And yes the stuff I do is reliable because everything I've done I do as a technician, but not on cars.

Ohh yea I had this done a long long time ago. and the supercharger is much much louder haha.
