The Ebay Intake...
#76
Well after clearing the code for a second time I have decided that his intake just doesnt like my car. I hate to spend a couple of hundreds of dollars or another that might cause me to kick a CEL again so I will have to think about my next move. It is quite amazing that I am getting a code for running rich with a CAI that should be teeling the motor more air is getting to the motor so I should be getting a lean condition, who knows??

Well I have an update. I found out why I started throwing a CEL. The diameter of the pipe at the filter is 2.6". The diameter of the pipe at the MAF is 3". I chopped the small piece off put my AEM dryflow on and havent had a CEL all weekend. The stock airbox pipe diameter is just over 3" so when the MAF saw less air coming in I threw a running rich code. So if I was you guys I would do the same thing I did. Just thought I would pass this along.

Yes that is what I did. Right where it goes from 3" to the smaller diameter is where I cut it. Make sure you clean the inside of the intake after cutting it to ensure you get all of the shavings out of it or your motor will not like you.

So you cut the pipe AND put an aem dryflow on and the problem is gone?
Bro i would put my money on the filter fixing the problem.
I feel like a broken record cuz i keep saying it hehe. pipe is pipe.
but filters are NOT just filters.

I can see how the decrease in diameter might mess with stuff though, along with the filter.
When I pick one of these up, I'll probably put it on first with just the filter, then if I throw a code, cut the pipe and see what happens. If two people have the same result with cutting it a little shorter, then I would think the neck down was causing some problems

OK when I started I put a AEM filter on it. I did not use the one that came with it so the filter was not the problem. Our cars are sensitive to the amount of air coming in so when you decrease the air the pcm will freak it will add more fuel so you go rich. When I cut the pipe I got rid of the restriction and it saw more air coming in just like the stocker so no CEL. Hey some people can put these on and not have a issue and then some of us have probs. Again the AEM filter WAS put on when I had the issue with a CEl so th filter didnt fix the issue, cutting the pipe did.

My vote goes to a combination of the two, I think you need to put the AEM filter on it, and if you have a problem with the CEL, then you would need to cut the pipe

I just bought the ebay intake and installed it with an AEM DRY flow from Advance Auto Parts. When im Idleing i Get a CEL. the cel is running Rich. Im going to try and cut the end pipe to see what happens.
If i had HPTuners would i be able to "tune" that out?

Dude save your self the headache of a CEL and cut the end of your intake. I have the Exact same one only myn is polished with an AEM dryflow on the end. After about 25 miles i got a CEL and looked around and found a thread on how the diameter of that pipe, how its smaller at the beginning messes with the MAF sensor.
Heres where you need to cut it at.
Also get a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 black hose cut it so it opens up then put it on around the hole where your intake goes through. It will rub(the intake tube) on the side of the opening.
I had to re-do myn on Monday and havn't had a CEL yet and ran a tank of gas through it today. The intake sounds Awsome Though

I have the polished one and also the aem i didn't the pipe and have had no cels for about a month and 2000 miles. (pipe is pipe but the filter save you headaches and money, AEM dryflow FTW!)

Just an FYI, Napa now offers a Gold Filter for the SS supercharged Cobalt.
It is a dry filter.
I wont say it is better as I have not yet tested the AEM
Just some food for thought.
42736 is the part number.
If you have any questions just ask. I can provide flow rates as well as full technical info on it as well as the oil filter and cabin air.

No cell on mine yet either, it needs the ding that the injen inakes have. It rubs on the hood support mount. other than that and touchy throttle response, all good. Will be going to the dyno on 4/28, will see if it has any gains...

Still running the intake, no codes still. Need to put a little dent where the hood mount bumps it. Also there is a ground on the front side that rubs a bit. Took the car to the track last night. It seems to have picked up about .5 mph consitantly in the 1/8, but comparing timeslips from last year, looks like it is picking it up on the top end. Wish I would have went to a 1/4 mile last year. Oh well, It doesn't take that long to swap them, may go to Beach Bend on a rental day, run and swap out. depends on how lazy I get. Will be going to the dyno on the 28th. I guess I will see what it turns out.

Just so everyone knows I give this intake a good rep. I bought it and an AEM dryflow for under $120 on Ebay. I cut the piece off the pipe, and installed it about a month ago. No check engine light, and a slight gain with mostly just alot more sound.
Now complimented by stage 2, it makes the charger scream at WOT.
