I have just under 34,000 miles. Took my car in to the dealer twice because it would never start on the first try when the engine was cold, but they said they couldn't "duplicate the problem". Also, the idle was real bouncy, sometimes stalling while I was waiting at lights. And even though my tail pipe was turning my bumper black, I also kept getting the lean code (and couple times a P0300 (random misfire)). Haven't driven it much since I changed the filter yesterday, but so far the issues seem to have gone away. I feel like an idiot for not already replacing the filter, and wonder why the dealer didn't check it when I brought it it (they even suggested that it sounded like I had a problem with fuel pressure).

To relieve the fuel pressure you must remove the fuel pump relay then start the car. I have submitted a how-to on changing the fuel filter, but the mods have not or will not approve it for some reason...

Where's the pump relay? Is it next to the "battery" in the front? In ther large black box?

The "battery" you are referring to is the fuse box (Battery is in the trunk).
According to the factory service manual you only have to relieve the tank pressure by loosening the fuel fill cap -- and expect some fuel spillage when you disconnect the filter lines -- no need to run the car with the fuel pump relay pulled to remove pressure from the lines.
If you really have that much junk in your filter with low mileage you need to take your car in for the dealer to look at replacing your gas tank. If it is fine rust particles it will only get worse.

Sorry to get off the topic at hand, but 06noscobaltss what does the dirt on the outside of the filter have to do with how clean or clogged the inside is?
