Talking GM Performance Parts Catalog

I just picked up the 2006 GM performance parts catalog. There are quite a few upgrades available for the Cobalt Ecotec engine including a set of pistons GM recommends for engines expected to run over 650 HP. Highly recommend picking one up, there free. Parts guy at the Chevrolet dealer said the new New 2007 catalog is due to come out soon.

I picked one up from Carfagno Chevrolet. They offered to sell me the SS S/C Stage II kit at cost if they do the install. I was more than willing to agree. Just go to the parts counter and ask for the GM Performance Parts catalog. They are more than happy to give one away because it means business to them. I'm going to take my time and look it over tonight like a **** magazine. They even have blank cams so you can have a custom ground cam made. Sweet... They have a 268 duration cam @ .050 preground.

Catalog may be new, but the parts for the ecotec have been around for about 3 years. There are actually 3 different sets of GMPP pistons out there. I have a set of the forged aluminum stock replacement pistons that are actually manufactured by JEPistons for GMPP.

Exactly, and most of them are designed for the race block, which has a larger bore and require a specific GMPP rod and crank. Get all the facts before you order GMPP pistons

I probably won't need more than the stock pistons. I don't plan on exceeding 300 hp. But that may be subject to change. My friends who already run in the low 12's tell me that everyone starts out saying, "I just want an extra 40 or 50 HP." What ever the figure is, I am told that sooner or later I'll want more.

I was just impressed that there are so many parts for an American sport compact. When I look through magazines I don't see parts advertised for the Cobalt. Mostly import parts.

Upgrades will be difficult beyond a Stage II kit as I am trying to go to school for automotive in the fall. It's been a few years since I worked in a garage and I need to learn more about modern cars.

When I was at the dealer the other day the head tech said something about a GMPP strut package that had just come out for the Cobalts... anyone heard anything about this?

GM parts dealer will provide any books and parts. I recommmend the GM Sport Compact Performance Build Book P/N 88958646 this book has parts rated from stock to 1400 HP and can be picked up at a local GM dealer or Contact Carfagno Chevrolet at 610-275-0507 ext. 122 and ask for Steve Hartly. Tell him PFM said to call and get the parts at a discount. Best time to call is on Saturday between 10:00am and 2:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

Many parts will fit the stock block.

NOTE: Always check with a qualified and knowledgeable tech before buying parts. Checking with someone who knows can save much time and aggravation. The GM Sport Compact Performance Build Book assumes the reader has a good amount of mechanical and automotive knowledge and experience.
