I Went To The Dark Side With A Gen 3 Motor
That's right boys and girls... I ditched the TVS and went turbo. I've flew pretty low about this unless you spend any time in the Manitoba SS 2013 thread or was part of the build lol. But I'm getting to pumped about this, so I figured it was time. I'll try to keep this as short as possible. But a lot has happened in the last 4 months and I have lots to say haha.
Let's do a quick recap incase you forgot or haven't followed my build. I bought and ran a TVS in the summer of 2012. At the end of the summer I blew a sleeve in #2 cylinder due to a bad tune. So I spent the winter of 2012/2013 doing a build. Bought a built short block from a member on here that wasn't build properly and it packed in the bottom end within 1000 miles. So I bought a used stock long block locally that I threw my ported head and cams in to get me by and not have my car down again.
Well at the beginning of September I was driving to a friends place and got stuck behind a motorcycle doing like 45mph on the highway. Around that time I guess my meth had failed (pick up line off the tank broke) and all it took was a short 4-7k pull in 2nd to bust a ringland in #4 cylinder.... Knock sensor didn't even pick it up it was detonating so bad. Didn't have time to look at my wideband. Guess that's what happens when you rely on meth to run. I managed to limp the car to my friends place a few miles away.
As I laid in the middle of my friends yard ready to die I had had enough of this car and build. Started to look at different things. The real **** off. I ordered a full 3" ZZP exhaust that showed up 2 days after I blew the motor again. Then my good American friend Taylor (Infraredline) mentions he has an almost complete ZZP turbo kit for sale with an S252ET turbo he got off of a friends car that he would give me a good friend discount on. Well that perked my interest immediately. I did some research and talked to a few people that ran this turbo. Everyone seemed to really like it! It's ZZP's favorite turbo to run. Am I going to break any power records with it, no. But it sounds like a really fun, quick spooling turbo that's rated to 450whp. And watching vids of the old turbo kit owner race Infraredline on a stock motor, 22 psi and pump gas I was impressed. Just tired of pushing the TVS to the ragged edge when only having 91 available. I'm tired of meth injection. This is the second time it's failed. Luckily caught it the first time but wasn't spraying near as much. So I pulled the trigger on it. Sold every bit of my aftermarket supercharged parts and bought the kit and needed turbo parts on here all under the wire haha. And came out a couple hundered dollars ahead in the end!
Now I needed a motor. I talked to Mr.B about getting my 2nd motor sleeved and building it but it's just stupid expensive to do living in Canada by time the smoke cleared. Looking around I see ZZP offered a brand new Gen 3 motor capable of over 500whp for the LSJ for 2k. Well bang for the buck I couldn't really say no. So I bought one (sorry John nothing fancy lol), threw on my ported head by LSJION, sold my ZZP stage 2 blower cams and bought a spare set of ZZP stage 2 turbo cams Taylor had. Talking to ATI if I should sell my OD damper for an UD they recommended I stick with the OD damper due to it being larger thus working better. Doubt it's going to affect spool time much.
I haven't seen anyone really push this turbo on anything other than a stock motor so I'm excited to see what it can do with a ported head, cams and higher boost. Shooting for 420+ whp on 91. No more meth injection. I will update this thread with dyno and track numbers. It's gonna be a long rest of the winter haha.
Things left to do before start up:
- Install catch can set up
- Put headlights back in. Waiting on new hid's.
- Install new exhaust and downpipe

nice build.. meth isnt that bad well not for me SO FAR lmao. quick question, how much maintenance did you do with your meth kit? What brand of kit was it? just curious to how the pick up line broke off the tank.

i had a feeling this was gona happen wen u and i were talking about ur poped engine and all that.
looks good man.
so it looks like zzp justs pops the crank out and reclocks the reluctor and puts it back in.
i figured they change the pistons also. not a big deal though.

Thanks for the support guys! Yes I will be running DI pistons. When I drove over the border to pick up the motor I looked at it and was like wtf..... Called zzp to confirm I got the right motor. The said they did a before and after test from an lsj to ldk and it made no abnormal difference in the tune.
As for the maintainence on my meth kit the first time the pump died. And the second time the pick up line pulled out of the fitting where it clips into the tank. Just **** luck.
Trust me Adam I never saw this coming lol. I thought I was gona die with my TVS. And perhaps things would be different if I had E85. But with only 91 it's hard not to go turbo if you want to make decent power. Unless you run lots of meth or be on the bottle. NOS doesn't really interest me. That's why I didn't go that route. It kinda came down to ditch the car or go turbo.

Yes the reluctor wheel is modified. That's where the extra $500 for the lsj version comes to play.
Here's the thing with the DI pistons. I didn't know that were coming with them. When I first talked to zzp about this motor Zoomer said they come with JE pistons. That's where I thought the additional money was going to. Got the motor and saw DI pistons and I ****. So I called them and he thought I was talking about their forged Gen 3. Ugh. So this is what I'm running. They've done over 20 ldk swaps in lsj's with no problem. But the weak point is the pistons yes. If I need over 500whp I'm buying a different car haha.

the lsj is the only odd ball bolt on reluctor besides the old l61.
all the other ecotecs

basicly gen II and III
use the same reluctor same clocked position
on with blues thread.
ive seen that 252 turbo on other cars makes very nice power.

The only lsj remotely close to my set up I could find that had dyno papers BYT did. Stock motor, 91, meth injection, 23 psi and it made 412/384.
