Shift slow, let the motor come down in rpm quite a bit . When i'm just cruising i take about 2 seconds to shift into 2nd and its smooth as silk plus doesn't abuse the clutch. Just try it , take 1st up to 2500- 3000 rpm push in the clutch shift into second and wait another second or 2 and let the clutch out .

one thing that i notice is that if you make a harsh exchange from being on the clutch to being on the gas, it will shake. try to make a nice, smooth exchange when you shift. rather than just letting it out, ride it out just a little bit. not so much that you're wearing on he clutch, but just enough to make it a smooth exchange into the gas.

killah thug08 is rite get stage 2 they will reflash ur car and the 1-2 shift is a hell of a lot better and when u shift, shift at 3 grand and dont boost so much dont boost more than 5 psi once u get to about 3 grand ur boost will go to zero making it easier for u to hit the gear the way u want hope this helps just putting my 2 cents out there

i have been driving stick since i was 15, the cobalt is the most diffacult one i have ever drivin, i had the same problem untill i got poly trans mounts. They keep the motor from rocking back and forth even if you dont shift perfecly.

This is not always the case. I have full mounts and even traction bars yet I still have the 1st gear-jumpy problem sometimes as well. No, this is not my first stick ever, and no, I didn't just get this car. It may have something to do with all the torque down low... or something.
one of the things that helped me too was shifting higher in first gear. if you shift into 2nd at 20mph (which is right around 3k in first) you're putting the car way out of it's efficiency range because of our shitty first gear.
i can almost guarantee that the people that are lurching first are letting off the gas too quickly before they're dis-engaging the clutch.
again, my advice is to find the engage point and push the clutch in slightly past that. also, maybe you guys that lurch are letting off the gas too early in first. what do i mean? try this. accelerate in first, get it up to 4krpm, and let off the gas. what happens? feels like you hit the brakes from the tranny resistance. so you have to do one of 2 things to fix it:
1) let off the gas later as you're pushing in the clutch
2) push the clutch in faster
it helps when you can shift fast too. it's just a matter of getting used to it.

Take more time as you shift from 1st to 2nd, be smooth and easy on releasing the clutch, and smoothly go into the gas. I've never had a problem with mine on the 1~2 shift after the first day.
Also, on a side note. Don't change your full synthetic oil at 3k miles! What the hell man! At least wait until 5k miles.

1st to 2nd is definately touchy in these cars. I have found that if you take 1st gear to 3000 - 3500 when shifting it is fairly smooth. Like InfinityzeN said, if you shift real slow and smooth from 1st to 2nd it isn't bad either. I think the main problem with the jerky 1st to 2nd shifts is that the gear ratios between 1st and second are so far apart. 1st gear is just ridiculously low in these cars.
As for rotating tires - for soft compound tires you *should* rotate about every 3000, I usually go every 5000, it really depends on how hard you are on the tires though. I wouldn't recommend going further then 5000 without rotating though.

So nobody drinks their soda after a stop light when your driving
It happens, for me its usually when driving on those 25 mph roads. Usually cause I bounce the accelerator with my foot just as the clutch is released. Push the clutch back in and start over.

I agree with what most are saying, all you have to do is wait a little longer between the first to second shift. I believe the problem has to do with first gear being geared so low that when you shift from first to second it takes the rpms a little longer to drop than the other gears. So if you are shifting from first to second too quickly at low speeds the rpms have to drop more to engage second causing the car to stumble until engaged. It might also have to do with the way the car is tuned since I hear stage 2 alleviates this problem slightly.
