I was looking for a new daily driver and decided to get a Cobalt SS. When I got to the dealership selling it, I noticed that the car was not stock. Most of the stuff I can see for myself (Magnaflow exhaust, zzp header (or so it looks), zzp downpipe, scan gauge, aem wideband, and a super heavy clutch. Upon closer inspection I noticed solid motor mounts and an engine damper on the passenger side. I had a couple of questions I would like answered to further my knowledge of these cars.

1. Its running 20 lbs of boost, and has an intense racing sticker. Does this mean it has the stage 5 kit or just a smaller pulley?

2. It idles at 950-975 rpms, and has a slight lobe. Is this the stock idle?

3. Are there any issues I should look out for? I have done some reading and have found there are some problems with the electronic steering. Anything else?

I'm sure there will be more in the future, but this is all I can think of now. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but it looks like this is where most of the knowledgeable people would be.

Thanks,
Mike.
i'm running 20 lbs of boost and my idles like that my car is fine

Well, I did a full pull today through all the gears, and I noticed that it runs higher than 20 lbs of boost on upper end. By extrapolating the number, it looks to be close to 25. Next time I'll check with the digital scan gauge. Also, when I got the car, I noticed that if it idles for too long, it seems to run on 3 cylinders. It runs like this until I clear the DTC's. I wrote them down and heres what they are: 20036, 20140, 20141, 20507. I looked and couldn't find any information on these numbers.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... it just idles fast.

hahaha.

Either way, no one knows what these codes mean? I put on the Fujita F5 cold air intake, and haven't seen the problem since. I was hoping the extra air would lean the car out. I haven't done too many wot pulls with it since the install, but I'm hoping its better than the 10:1 that it was running before. What is a good air fuel for these cars? I know its different for each car because of air density in the area, different heat exchangers, different amounts of boost, etc, etc, but is 12.5:1 a good number to shoot for at WOT? This will be on 93 octane.

I'd check those numbers again... those aren't coming up in my Mac Tools DTC handbook.

Well thats off the interceptor gauge. When you compare them to other diagnostics, the 2 = P2, so P20036, P20140, P20141, P20507. Thats if I remember correctly from when I glanced over the gauge pdf.

From those codes, I can tell ya that car has a cat delete probably. Also, you might wanna raise the idle till you figure out what is wrong with it.

Well I know the car has a cat delete, and the idle is high enough. If anything, I want to lower it. As for a compression / leak down test, I just got clobbered with snow last night. I need to wait for it to melt a little bit so I can pull the eclipse out of the garage.

i use costco insurance

Yeah.. The big 3 is no longer car companies.. it's government, big oil, and insurance companies.

In GM's service information it has a list of all DTC's , it jumps right on past any P19XX and P20XX numbers and jumps from a P18XX right to P21XX in the list. . Here's how it goes in SI.

P1818
Transmission Fluid Pressure (TFP) Valve Position Switch Indicates Drive without Drive Ratio
TCM

P2101
Control Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance
ECM, PCM

Could you just look under appendix P2, then look at codes 0036, 0140, 0141, 0507?

Here's the whole list out of GM SI , I didn't edit it at all so it looks a little jumbled . Here's the format below .

Well according to that chart.. it says its the oxygen sensor (P0036, P0140, P0141) and idle speed is high (P0507). I know the car has a wide band. Do these car's have to 02 bungs? He may just have replaced the narrow band with the wideband, and just use the simulator/translator of the WB controller. As for the high idle... I knew that, lol. Does HPTuners have an idle adjustment, or will I have to lean out the lower fuel curves? Are there any air bypass screws that I can adjust on the throttle body to lower it also?

There is a dyno about 45 minutes away from me. It would be nice to use when I'm fine tuning the car.

...you can adjust for idle speed with hpt . There is no manual adjustments to make to the electric TB like the old school days of adjusting the TPS and IAC .

The factory narrow band 02 sensor is right in the collector of the manifold . There another 02 sensor after where the cat would be on the down pipe ...is that where the wide band is ? ~or did he put the wide band in the manifold .

Ok, thats what I was wondering. How do you wire in the wideband to the pro version? Is there just an accessory wire that leads to the pcm, and you just tie it into that?

Agreed.

DSM's are not known for quality or reliability. When you combine Chrysler quality control with Mitsubishi engineering, you end up with an abomination known as Diamond Star Motors.

HP Tuners >DSM Link.

Quick Reply: Just bought an aftermarket SS
