seems unnecessary to change down to a 0 weight oil... from the video posted above, he was using 5W-30 in -26 degree temps and it started fine. Where do u live that you'd need a 0w oil..?

I don't know how you'd see any increase in fuel economy with 0w30. It's benefit is in cold start situations.
When the car is at operating temperature, it's a 30 weight, just like 5w30.

I used it last winter when I lived in Maryland because everyone was out of mobil one 5w30. It is cheaper because it was made for the colder states. I didn't notice a difference in performance or fuel economy. If you want an increase in both of those feilds, stop messing around with 0w30 when you don't even live in a cold enough place to see a difference and switch to royal purple. You definetly can tell a difference with this stuff. I've been using it for about a year now and my car runs great and getting around 27 mpg avg city/hwy

Honestly my car is running better with it over the 5w30 but then again like I said I switched from conventional to synthetic at the same time so part of what im feeling might be that as well. But my cars running well on it. And lately its been mid 20s (f) during the day here in stl. So this its been a bit cold here.

You don't want to go too thin in the Summer. I would honestly stay with 5w30 in the summer just in case.
I've thought about 5w40 in the summer though since I'm pretty hard on my car.
The less the oil sheers down, the more protection you have. I've heard M1 5w30 can sheer down pretty thin when it gets run super hot.

We ran mobil 5w30 in a legends car for years.. I'll never run an engine with anything else after watching it survive those conditions.
Legends use a Yamaha FJ 1200 engine which are air cooled, so the oil temps get up near 400* :-O
Anyway, we had one get so hot one time that it warped the head to the point that the cams couldn't turn and it tore the timing chain in two. The mobil didn't break down and kept it all lubricated, and it didn't even mark the cams!

Its STILL a 30 weight oil, and may actually be thicker at temperature than a 5w or 10w.
Take German Castrol, for example, best oil out there IMO. 0w-30, yet its almost a 40 at temperature..

yes the first number is the viscosity at a set cold temp.... and the 2nd number is the viscosity at operating temp.... the only thing is when that motor goes from hot to cold starts and back and forth the oil drains down in to the oil pan very quickly...thats the key drawback .... plus in most high performance motors bearing tolerances are different and they need the added weight to properly lubricate the bearings while the motor goes from cold to warm.... and in most of our cars the engine never reaches 210*F which is the temp most oils use as the stated operating temp....
