Yes use break in oil! There is a reason they make it.

Thanks for the tip!

I was also thinking maybe we could crank it without the injector fuse to simply run the pump and get some oil moving

everything was liberally assembly lubed, and since we didn't replace anything in the bottom end bearing wise, i feel like i'd be ok on conventional oil, maybe add some lucas to it idk. well see what the break in stuff sells for

I would not run lucas. Just grab some break in oil. Napa is what I would use. I would also spin the motor with out running it, you want everything totally lubed.

The only doubt that i have about starting is perhaps that cam position sensor that your how to showed being shown wrong in the book. I think we wound up going by the book but i forsee us having to change it.
You should have followed my picture in my thread. The way I have it shown is correct.

If you set it like the book it will set the cps code and give u a hard start.

By all means, uplug the injector harness and coil harness and crank it over a few times for a few seconds. Especially since everything was apart.

Take it out, and do it right.

Line up the balancer with the mark on the front cover.

TDC #1/#4 compression.

Set sensor wheel as shown in my photo.

Pictures are worth a thousand words.

I'm a visual learner, so seeing it done always helps me put it together in my head.

Cyl 1 & 4 will both be at TDC when the balancer and the cams are lined at 10 oclock for exhaust and 2 oclock for intake.

Ok, they are so we should be good.

To be truthful, two of my buddys did all the timing stuff one night while i was at school so minus seeing the cam gears like that i didn't see the rest of the process, and i doubt they did your slack removal trick.

another thing, now that i've been relooking at your how to, i am not positive if we used the flange sealant on the rear cam caps....

I am to. I can't just read a book and then go do it. I need pictures to visualize it.

never mind he took it out the top. Just guessing and with my hand measuring in the air, it should be do able. It will be a close fit, but I bet you will have no problems getting it back in. We slapped a 428 cj and c6 tranny in my dads 77 step side f100. We had to deflate the tires and put it on rims to clear or the hood. I know if that is do able you got this.
