Lean Code

Alright guys I need to know if it is normal for a lean code to show up whenever you put a new CAI on a LSJ. Sorry, this is sort of a double post cuz I asked this on a similar thread, but it wasn't really getting any attention.

are you otherwise stock?

If you are then you probably shouldnt be getting a lean code as stock from factory the car runs on the rich side.

oil from the filter contaminates the sensors inside the mass air causing the code, just a thought.

you will eventually blow cylinder #4 if its really lean.

You shouldnt be running lean, there's gotta be something else that's not right....

What is the code exactly?

Typical with the K&N.
Pull the mass air sensor out and clean it with mass air cleaner only.
Reset the light.
you should be good to go.

Yeah you're probably right Jim. The filter was probably OVER oiled from factory.

After arguing with the oiled filter and cel I switched to th AEM dry flow and never got another lean code.

And I agree with BigRob, to much oil.

wouldnt to much oil on the filter restrict airflow causing it to run rich?

Here is what the K&N webpage had to say.

7. Can a K&N filter give my engine too much air flow?

No. An engine can only draw in a certain volume of air depending on the engine's size (measured by such things as bore, stroke and number of cylinders). Vehicles are designed to accommodate large changes in air pressure so they can operate at sea level or at an altitude of 14,000 feet. Engine computers adjust the amount of fuel required as a result of changes in air pressure (density). Air filter restriction when the filter is new and especially as the filter loads with dust will result in lower air pressure and availability similar to being at a high elevation. High-flow air filters that were invented by K&N were designed to reduce the work necessary to pull air through the filter and to increase air pressure. Increased air pressure is one of the key elements in producing more power.

27. Will a K&N filter cause my vehicle's mass air sensor to fail?

No, it is both impossible and ridiculous.

It is impossible because we know that the oil treatment on our cotton is very small (usually less than 2 ounces). Once the oil is properly and evenly absorbed through the cotton, no oil will come off, even under extreme engine conditions. It is ridiculous, because no dealership or service provider has ever been able to provide us with evidence to support this "myth," and in fact, our investigations have revealed that even authorized dealerships are simply speculating and do not have the test equipment necessary to know whether the sensor has failed or why. It is even more ridiculous because some car manufacturers use and sell air filters treated with oil on a regular basis. There are also major brands of disposable air filters that are treated with oil. We all use oil for the same reason, it helps in the filtration efficiency of an air filter. For more information on this topic including videos, see our Mass Air Flow Sensor Statement page.

So the code should go away and I should quit worrying, right?

Everyone says its normal to throw a code when you only have a intake and no other mods. I didn't throw a code when I had a intake now that I installed my stage 2 kit I'm getting a lean code. Now would it be better to get the stage 3 pulley on the stage 2 canned tune? Cuz I thought the stg 2 kit was suppose to make you run a lil rich. So will more boost make me run more rich?

okay, so since i have last posted on this, my check light has came on and off almost daily. i just got off of the phone with k&n and the tech guy said that since they do not have an intake listed for 2007 (only 05-06) it probably has a more sensitive computer and it going on and off can still be a bad thing. because when it is on the computer is saying that it is too much air for it to handle and that it will make me burn up my valves if i keep it on there because the cylinders will be running too hot.

what i need is experienced people with 07 ss/sc's or someone who has dealt with this before to please advise me on what i should do. help please.

also, if it is running hot, could that be monitored by the coolant? i'm guessing no, but it's worth the asking. i find it very hard to believe i'm running lean, i still get a good ammount of black carbon around the bumper where the muffler tip is.

If there's a CEL on a new stage 2, it means there's a problem. I threw a lean code immediately after installation and traced it back to a broken o-ring on #1 injector. Screwing around with the pully won't help. Smaller pullies will run leaner still.

He's just covering K&N's ass. Plenty of people run their intakes/filters without any problem. It's just the oiled filter issue again- get a cleaning kit, wash the filter out and re-oil less heavily than it comes from the factory. I've had a K&N filter on my 07 for a year or so now and my car hasn't blown up yet.

while that is good to know about your 07 he did tell me that they've tested 200 or more MAF's and covered them in oil and it didn't do anything...
