More Timing Chain/Tensioner/Guide questions.

Hey yall, My friend just deployed and left me with his car and a todo list, with supplied funds. I've been researching the LSJ engine a little, but he has a 2006 Cobalt SS with a 2.0L LSJ Supercharged.

Just recently, The engine started making noise associated with the timing chain. At first, we thought to just replace the tensioner, then we realized that the top guide plastic piece had broken off and fallen deep into the timing cover. So, Now I've decided to pull it all apart to clean the pieces out and replace the timing chain/guides/tensioner/bolts and be done with it. Which brings me down to my main question, What is a quality brand kit that wont hurt the pocket to bad. Ive come across a few that ill post below.

Oh, besides removing the wheel, inner fender well, serp belt, and harmonic balancer. Is the timing cover fairly simple to remove? (Note: I have the valve cover off right now.)

Cloyes is the one you want. Buy from rockauto.com or google shop the cloyes part number. That will give you the best price. Don't pay more than 120 for the whole set. Just make sure you get the camshaft set and not the balance shaft set

Thanks for the advice.. As far as rock auto goes, I'd rather support my local auto parts store. I'd rather they stay in business so i can get emergency parts fast.

Are there any tips and tricks for replacing all these parts?

get a workshop manual. put the engine at tdc on #4 with that cylinders cam lobes at 2 o clock exhaust and 10 clock inlet. chain links lined up with diamonds on cam pulleys. rotate until you acheive that, then remove large hex nut with allen key and access 6X 1 mm bolt etc and remove front crank pulley and front cover etc. front crank keyway at 12 oclock, colored link at 5 o clock. LNF Crank keyway is different for lining up.

get a workshop manual.

this is an easy job dont right, long and careful as you go. done wrong, its a disaster. parts of the black guide will be in the pan, so you should remove that. the CED kit has new oilers, gears, guide bolts, u should replace the guide bolts they are weak and need a torque wrench to install right.

call crate engine depot at 1877 441 5150 ask for tom tell him what you need (complete lsj timing set) then ask him if he can email you the timing how to in a pdf

So, im better off going CED instead of Cloves? Or is it just because the CED kit comes with the new oiler and extra bolts?

As much slack as that chain had in it, I'd say you are very lucky that you didn't skip timing and destroy some valves

So I'm swapping in a new head and was gonna do some timing components as well. Which kit is the better option. Ced or cloyes?

cover gasket is a very good one, viton seal in a soft alloy sandwich, and often is reusable. The crank bolt is torque to yield and the risk if you re use it, is high. Up to you. Put it up there with the work shop manual...good luck.

alright yall, im finally down to doing it this weekend. i feel like i know what im doing after i get the timing cover off.. but im having trouble getting the harmonic balancer off and the tensioner was a bitch. Am i required to remove the engine mount and lower the engine for better work space?

Nope.

I used an impact wrench to get the 21mm bolt off though.

you may or may not the dampner is not a press fit sometimes they slide right off sometimes they don't just make sure upon reassembly that you lubricate the chain and front seal and you get the dampner throught the oil pump and on the key before you tighten it up

For installing the tensioner??

It's up on the CED site. I just purchased the upgraded tensioner, because I'm re-timing my engine at the moment. The new tensioner comes in its compressed state, so all u need to do is remove the old one, and install the new one.

I can make one once I'm done timing my motor....

I planned on making a How To for my cams & valve springs, I can add the timing part to the mix.
