Well, I just bought my balt and am working through replacing all the fluids, filters, etc. Next on my list was the air filter.

When I was taking it apart I noticed that the fender well had never been removed (still stuck to the body by the factory undercoating), and worst of all, the screws holding the bottom airbox cover on had never been touched/removed (verified by a 20x card magnifier)

That's what a filter looks like with 87,000km's on it (54,000 mi)

There are holes RIGHT THROUGH the filter When I took the intake pipe off the supercharger it was full of sand, and I could see where water had been pooling

Instead of putting the same crappy setup back I decided to make my own intake. I hate intakes made out of metal because they are so susceptible to heat soak (had one on my 04 Grand Prix GTP compG until I replaced it with a custom ABS one as well). I wish more companies made intakes out of composite materials.

I heard some horror stories about cold air intakes suffering from the filter getting wet. When driving in the rain, water pouring on it from the gaps around the headlight and foglight so I figured I better do something to keep it dry. See the near bottom of this post for my custom "Hydro Shield" lol

Got the MAF mount all done. Will put some sensor safe Permatex Blue gasket maker on the lip of the MAF gasket before screwing it in. The filter goes right on the end of this 22.5 degree elbow

Almost done! Just gotta put in the splash guard in and attach the filter to the MAF elbow, and glue the MAF elbow to the elbow coming through the fender hole WOOT! I hope I don't drip any glue in the MAF... might have to use it sparingly on that last connection

Ohhhh.... soooo close

Not sure how well the MAF will read the incoming air being at a 11.25 degree angle but it was the only spot in the fender well I could mount it. Lots of options in the engine bay, not so much in the fender well (with such a massive filter!).

I guess we'll see how it works.

ALL DONE! OMFG it just rips now, nice loud whine too!!! Can't wait to get my 2.8 pully and plug my silencer holes!

Sorry for the shaky camera work! I was holding the camera with my left hand and steering and shifting with my right!!! In my previous vid my GF was holding the camera from the back seat, lol.

I dont like the maf placement. It really needs to be in a straight pipe that is the same inside diameter of the stock one (or needs to be tuned if the diameter is larger). I am happy you used ABS pipe fittings and not PVC as PVC will out gas chlorine gas (aka a WWI chemical weapon) and release some arsenic when used as an intake.

HEHE thanks Yeah, that's my "Maxx Scoop" HydroShield!!! LOL!!! I had my choice of pink, green or blue, but decided on blue so it matched the car a lil

Thanks! It seems to idle and pull like a champ, but I'll keep my eye out for any issues. I think maybe cause the air is bending around the corner of that elbow, the MAF might actually be getting a quicker flow (like in the stock pipe!).

I love ABS because it insulates the inside air sooo well! Made night and day different on my IAT temps in my 04 Grand Prix!!

Can't wait till it rains and I get to try out my Maxx Scoop HydroShield. Glad it's non-clumping

Im not sure about the the intake would atleast get tuned for something like that, but points for the maxx scoop hydro shield and whoever owne this car before u need to be beat the **** up, i just dont understand how u just let a car like that just fall apart

You should at least drill a few holes at the bottom of the max scoop canister (if you havent already).

The water that comes in through the fender liner from the tire will eventually pile up in there w/o a way for it to drain.

Also, I would change the placement of the MAF sensor. It's really not in the best spot. Water and grime leak down the fender liner at that location.

Props for trying something different though.

I drilled 1/4" holes in each bottom corner of the Maxx Scoop HydroShield to prevent water buildup. I'm not too worried about the MAF, it's got a bit of clearance between the wires and the fenderwell, so shouldn't get much run off on it. Also, the filter and/or intake pipe are not touching the HydroShield at all, so any run off, except from the intake pipe itself, won't be gettin anywhere near the filter

MAXX SCOOP FTW! Way to be creative. I honestly can't say I would trust this thing, but I do admire the use of ABS and it makes me wish it were a viable option from aftermarket companies.

i gotta admit, ive helped friends do things liek this, however it was with cheaper, older cars. helped a guy do a dryer hose intake on his sunbird. ive seen guys make snorkles for 4x4s out of abs, it actually works great for that.

you would be much better off using the factory air piping and airbox and just doing the "airbox mod". the factory intake piping isnt so bad.
