need some advanced help

Ok please no rumors or stabs in the dark, if you have solid information and ideas let me know.

Ok heres the problem, about 2 weeks ago i started getting a cold tick in my motor. The motor ran fine and as soon as the car was warmed up the ticket would go away. Tried seafoam and oil cleaners, didnt work. Decided that it might be a bad rocker arm sound appeared to be coming from the intake cam. So wednesday we used a cam gear holder to keep the timing, removed the intake cam and changed all the rocker arms on the intake side. Put the motor back together, when we put the cams back on both myself the person helping me dont believe the timing got off and if it did it wasnt more than 1-2 notches on the gear. According to a good GM mechanic and redline owner friend of mine, it takes the timing to be off by 5 notches to bend a valve. Ok now after we put the engine back together we went to go start it and nothing. The engine just cranked like there was no spark or no fuel. So we tested the spark by arching the coil pack to the block, worked fine. Were pretty sure its getting fuel because after a few cranks you can smell the gasoline. Finally we did a compression test and 1 and 2 were both reading zero compression. We didnt test 3 and 4. Before this we did a compression test when the motor was running and ticking and it was average 200 across the block. So last night we manually retimed the motor and still no compression.

Were running out of ideas, want to get some more input before i pull the head and check the valves.

It still sounds like your timing is off. We did this same thing when we boosted my friends tacoma. It would crank and smell of gas but it had no compression, turned out to be 180* off timing. Also just this week we did the same thing on co-workers KA24 datsun 510. It would crank and even fire a bit but the timing ended up being a few teeth off

Did you replace the Cam Cap Bolts on that or did you re-use your old ones? Even if 1 tooth is off, its still ******* with your timing which is not good.

we reused the cam bolt for the time being to see if the ticking noise was related to what we fixed, if it didnt fix the ticking we would most likely have to remove the cam again, so the plan was to put a new one if it resolved the issue.

According to 06Black the cams can only go in one way, so i dont know about it being 180degrees off. Thats what i was thinking at first as well. and i still wonder because when i was looking at the cam gear it has 2 slots that line up with the cam, but i couldnt see a difference between the two that would determine which way to put the cam in.

Have you checked the timing chain tensioner for the ticking?

the ticking was definitely coming from the intake cam. but no we didnt check the timing chain tensioner. The ticking has taken a back seat right now to the lack of compression.

it has to be the valves staying open, there is no other explanation if all you did was remove the intake cam. re-time it dude

Did you take the chain off while the car was at Top Dead Center? I'm guessing you didn't mark the cam gears and the chain where it should go back in?

Youll need to replace the Cam Gear Bolts as well as the Cam Cap Bolts if you took the cams out.. Just a heads up.

Well i know the cam gear bolts need to be replaced, the cam cap bolts i didnt think had to be replaced, they only tighten to 7 lbs/ft.

No we didnt mark it, but we have completely retimed the motor with the same problem. took off the timing chain cover, drained the oil, and lined everything up accordingly.

I recently re-did my engine and the Cam Cap Bolts are Torque to yield well.. Thats what I was told.. I hope they are as thats the only bolts I'm waiting on to put my damned engine back together...

the gear that drives the one in question is a different size therfore if you are one degree off when you come full circle around the gear thats driving you are now 2 degrees off and so forth

There are 2 cam gears and they are both the same size and are connected to our 2 cams. That chain runs all the way down and is connected to the crank. if that chain didn't get off the Crank, its relatively hard to **** up the timing unless you have the cams switched around or something crazy as those Cam Gears WILL NOT go on those cams IF that chain isn't on properly.

I don't know what youre problem is OP, but I don't think timing is an issue

Not angry at all or frustrated.. Just talking about cars. Just trying to see what your talking about compared to what I thought about it I don't think its timing. I pretty much make everyone know when I'm angry.. I get real quiet and quit posting on forums and start Pming people my number and address You have access to both already :P
