odd exhaust question
I used to be into DSM's and i ordered like 14k worth of crap for my talon but decided to get a newer car and do some minor stuff to it and dump more moneyu into the Z28 ans Camaro SS well i have this Magnaflow 3 inch muffler sitting here, what would be involved in using this on my cobalt SS/SC? is a 3 inch too big? i just figured since i already have it might aswell use it since the muffler is the most expensive part of a cat back.

its not realy a coffe can it is 3 inches in and 4 inches out, not a fart can style, another question, i seen on most kits it comes with a resinator, do i realy need a resinator? id realy hate to waste this muffler by taking a loss on it, id rather use it!! but in the same hand i dont want to hurt performance by going too big. anyway i look at it im having a custom setup done, one of our family friends owns a local tuffy muffler so i get exhaust work done for a case of mountain dew

I would jus leave the resonator in if your not doing a catback .The factory exhaust is 2.5" all the way to the rear axle , where it then necks down to 2.25 " . I would just cut it where it necks down after the resonator and go 3" over the axle . That would be the best thing to do to keep the noise level down with that muffler . Magnaflow's in general seem to be some of the quieter mufflers on the market so u might be alright . Given that , I dont get why the magnaflow Cobalt SS specific exhaust is so loud
If you do it , and it ends up being loud as hell use the muffler Im using . I used a Borla TurboXL which is one of their XR1 race series mufflers and its quieter than the Borla Cobalt SS catback . Not much louder than stock actually . ITs salty cash wise though @ $173 thru Summit .

Cutting the exhaust from the 2 1/4" is actually a pretty good idea, if you don't mind buying the extra length of pipe ( big deal ).
put the magnaflow on, you may gain a little power, just not sure what it will sound like.
but I don't see it hurting your performance

well for the best gains get a cat-back exhaust,
if you wanna use your muffler you could cut after the resonator and weld your there.
another option is you could try to get the price of a 3" catback ans see of they will sell you the system minus the muffler, maybe you'll save there.
The only 3" cat-back systems right now are the JBP, and Altered Atmospehere

it depends on the muffler, going bigger will deffinately change the tone. my biggest thing is i dont want to spend 600 dollars on an exhaust that i can prety much get a stick of tube and have it all bent for under 100. when buying an exhaust your prety much paying for a name, id prety much assume that all the piping from the car to the muffler are all the same from kit to kit, just differant manufacturers use a differant muffler.

yea what he said ^^^
I dunno anything you'r going to do exaust wise to a 4 slamer is gonna make sound like bumble bee...shoot even the stock exaust is kinda like pushing that line....and you'r talking about a 7hp gain for 600 bucks....yuck!...and you sound like dieing donky......I would do long tube header (wow almost put an S at the end of header lol) for that same price and leave teh stock exaust on...I'd say your potential for power is higher...some of the V8 maro dudes used to have headers hooked to stock exaust, sounded very nice, and they had cut-outs right at the collectors...ya know...just in cas ;-)

refer to sig i have jet hott long tubes on my 95 Z28 with dual DMH electric cutouts 8 inches after the headers, open it sounds like a drag car via it being cammed heads ect... but closed it still sounds nasty via a 3 inch in 3 inch out 40 series flowmaster. my SS has pacesetter long tubes through a off road y pipe, 3 inches to the back where it meets a SLP two on the left (stock for the car) its one of the best flowing exhausts slp has ever made according to SLP. the SS sounds equaly as nasty via the .600+ .600+ lift cam i have stuffed in it but like i said i dont care if it sounds like holy hell as long as i get the mot performance out of it
