Has anyone ran into this problem? For some odd reason my turbo will not spool for a period of time. It makes a very loud humming sound when it wont spool up. I get 1.6 psi. Its been happening every morning for the past 3 days. When i get going i put it in second gear and hit the throttle and let off about 5 times. on the last time i hear what sounds like a clunk or scraping sound and then the turbo spools like normal. Now, im not sure if its 100% the turbo making the clunk noise because I just heard it today. What could this be? No smoke no burning smell or other random noises afterword. ??

How many miles on the turbo? Have you checked shaft play?

1500 miles bullseye 252ET and yes i have, theres the same amount of play in and up and up and down. barely little as in id say 1/4 inch? maybe less but it doesnt seem abnormal.

1/4" is a lot. You sure something isnt hitting? I dont know how a turbo just doesnt spool unless the WG is all the way open... Even then I would think it would still boost a little at least.

Im pretty sure, considering that the amount of play was the same both ways. Ill double check it soon. There was no oil or anything on the fins. All what seems to be perfect. could it be the WG stuck? or maybe the BOV?

Well I know with my 38mm WG all the way open and trying to hold 10 psi I get creep so I would think yours would still make boost.

I guess the BOV could be but I would think you would hear it...

Hopefully its something easy that the vetran turbo guys will point out.

you say its been happening every morning, how early?? i know around here its been cold enough at times where the turbo won't spin for about 1 minute after start up cause its too cold. but im also running 2qts of sae50 oil and 4.5 of 5w30 synthetic so its a little thicker than 6.5 of 5w30 synthetic. once everything warms up and the oil is more viscous, works just like normal.

We had a situation like this once that I can recall, and it ended up that there was actually a nut in the turbine housing. I'm sure there are other possibilities as well, but nothing comes to mind right off hand.

as a fellow man, i'm ashamed that you couldn't account for your nuts.

it is possibly needing to warm up, how long are you letting the car idle prior to driving? the turbo manufacturer will suggest a minimum amount of start and idle down time for their turbos.

Borg Warner says 30 seconds of start/idle time, I would extend that with it being cold. The more abuse you apply to that turbo on a cold start the shorter the life that it will see. You have low or no oil on the bearings, it will destroy the turbo very quickly. Also, check for all foreign material, remove the cold side housing take a look for any wear from the wheel coming in contact with the housing.

The first time this happened was right after i got off the highway ( I was driving for about 45 min). I go to accelerate with traffic and noticed the high pitch sound and the turbo not spooling. Lasted about 30 Min until it finally started to spool again. Now it only happens in the morning. I checked every possible piece that could cause this to happen. Im about to go take the intake (cold side) off and check that out becasue the car has been sitting over night, (hopefully the problem will occur). Its strange because like i said before after the problem stops everything is normal.

Even driving normal will make the sound of it being stuck, thats how I know. After about 1 minute thats when i start to accelerate and decelerate to "break it loose".

The top 2 blades do look like they have been hitting the compressor housing.

Shop is full right now, but if you can drop your car off, we can probably get at it on Monday. Can you drop it here Sunday night?
