the main reason i wanted to keep the stocker is because it muffles the whine so well, but i want to keep the whole airbox intact and that doesnt flow as well...since i just finished tuning for the ottp imma leave it on for a while haha i dont have a good are for tuning

That's the exact stuff they used on the intake tubing for Time Attack.
If you look on the previous page you can see how I modified my airbox. It's not butchered like the many airbox mods I've seen, and it will even still hold the stock filter. It allows more air in though, and makes for a louder whine. It is only a few notches quieter than my Injen was.

whats the down side about cutting the whole box off of our stock intakes? im most likey gonna run a k&n with the water shield and im not to worried about cutting the stock one. just wondering if its a bad idea or not. thankss

if i did the air box mod, this is how i'd do it
only down side to cutting it like this that i see are no more water protection(i run a hydro shield and it seems unnecessary to waste all that time cutting the box open)....if you dont cut the box up, you wont hear quite as much whine though

If you look at how the stock air box is designed the bottom lid actually directs air towards the filter. The top snorkle has rounded lips, and acts like a velocity stack. The air is pulled down to the bottom of the lid, and the rounded portion directs it towards the filter. I have always like the actual K&N replacement filter for the SS/SC, so I needed to come up with a way to maintain the bottom of the airbox. The holes I drilled let more air in, but still maintains the ability to run a stock or replacement filter. It also provides excellent water protection.

I would just leave the bottom off like Rootbeer mentioned if you plan on running an aftermarket filter other than the stock replacement K&N E-0777.

this is the filter(came with the ottp cai) RU2820 RU-2820 - K&N Universal Air Filters, Universal Rubber Filter that i tried to put on the stock box but i didnt want to sit and fight it trying to get the 3" ID rubber flange stretched over the 3.25" OD air box flange that i mentioned before. the e0777 stock replacement E-0777 - K&N Replacement Filters, Replacement Air Filter actually says its flange is 3.313...odd size

Thing I hated about the RAW which I currently have is no lower bracket by maf . My intake kept hitting the fender exit, so I jammed a silicone cuppler around it. Works...but ghetto lol

their instructions were to use zipties to mounts the lower piece...
i used metal tie wire instead(figured vibes would wear through the plastic) and tied up up pretty well(no bulge but it was slightly touching the liner), and i noticed that at some point the tire did rub a little, figured i probably hit a big bump or something
its functioned well, sounded great, fitment was poor though. Instructions also said to bend break lines on '07's...not cool. bent mine too much and ended up taking two days to install my intake due to custom fabbing a new brake line that was out of the way of the intake and it also rubbed hard on my pcm, actually rubbed a good 1/8" off the corner of the fins before i noticed it and jammed some rubber i had in between them(looked horrible)
what do you mean fender "exit?"

no fender bulge, sounds good, flows well, like any other metal cai the piping holds more engine heat than the stock plastic will. clearance on the filter was a bit tight, but i was able to get it not to touch anything. i ordered mine with an 1/8" npt for a meth nozzle(i was going to run it at the time, got rid of the kit before my intake arrived through) cuts on the couplers wasnt as clean/straight as they could have been, but didnt interfere with function, t-bolt clamps look/work well. lower mounting bracket held it well.
however i had to tap the screw holes in my maf bung and it could have been welded better.
the holes were pre drilled, but they went all the way through the bung, ok not a big deal except that the bung was only welded on the outside so the screw holes are a potential vac leak with out being welded on the inside of the tube also. i ended up using a dap of silicone in the screw holes before i put the screw in to try and fix a problem before i had one.

It's exactly 3" at the MAF housing as seen in my previous photo. The rest of the intake, if bended to a circle, messures close to 3" as well. I've measured mine a few times. That kink people think restricts flow actually doesnt. If you ever noticed it gets wider at that section to make up for some of the vertical "section loss".
The intake goes oblong in places for fitment, but it still maintains the same amount of flow.
The stock intake flows very well as long as you replace the crappy paper filter.
I've gone through so many intakes thinking "oh this one will make more power than this one". When in reality it never happened. A lot of people on here think just because it's stock it must be bad. That couldn't be further from the truth. The SS/SC can breath very well, it just can't exhale great. That's why exhaust mods like an exhaust ported head, or a simple header are far better modifications than aftermarket intakes.
I actually saw an almost 2 lbs/min MAF increase by switching out my Injen intake back to my stock intake with modified airbox and K&N filter. I also, compared intake restrictions by logging the supercharger inlet pressure. The stock intake with modified airbox and K&N filter was less restrictive there as well. Some wont want to believe this, and will try and call me out, but until you test it yourself you will never understand (not you Rootbeer this is a general statement).
To put this into perspective.... The Time Attack Cobalt SS/SC used the stock intake with a K&N filter and made close to 400whp on nitrous (over 300whp off nitrous). It flows just fine.
Aftermarket intakes work fine, and you can really pick what ever brand you want, but don't expect them to make a huge power increase over the stock setup. They do make the whine louder though.
