Timing Chain Tensioner

I was wandering if anyone has done the tensioner on here? Do you have to take the timing cover off? If you take the valve cover off you can see the tensioner. You can acces the the tensioner through an access power on the back of the head...just trying to save myself some work...if anyone knows it would be a lot of help. Thanks.

Yes you have to take the valve cover off in order to pop the tensioner once you insert it. Also, what access port are you referring to?

if its the hydralic tensioner that goes, its actualy removed without pulling the motor all apart. if you look on the back of the head, just above the waterpump, you will see a 1 1/4" nut, kinda looks like a plug. that is your hydralic tensioner. to remove it, just unscrew it.

im not sure if the problems are related to the hydralic tensioner or the chain guides that have the issues.

When you take the valve cover off you can touch the chain and see all the slack in it...its making a huge rattling noise all the time...it was really quiet, took it to the dealer they said the noise is the timing chain and they wont fix it because I have aftermarket mods...so I've been hearing a lot about the tensioner going bad and there is an updated one through the dealer...I figured I would try that first.

There were a few random cars that the tensioner was not release upon assembly but I would check to make sure your car is included in the TSB before you go through the trouble. There is no problem with the factory unit, if that is what your implying.

Could you happen to do a copy any paste for the whole TSB and which years it affects?

Has anyone here had it replaced under warranty? What are the signs of it going bad, a constant ticking?

Im trying to get it replaced now by the dealer but they are giving me a hard time because of aftermarket parts. Signs of it going bad are a really loud rattling noise coming from the front of the motor where the cam gears are. its gets louder and faster when you give it gas, you cant really hear it when you driving, its mostly at idle. It could set CEL for crank/cam sensor correlations like mine did because the chain has so much slack it throws off the sensor readings. It looks like I will be replacing it myself
