type of fuel?

truthfully, i asked the dealer myself, and he said i could pump the cheapest gas and the car would be perfectly fine
is that true? do u guys have n e problems with that?
cuz i know if i put premium i will get better performance
so i figure put premium in the summer and cheap in the winter
and would that harm the engine?

Man no offense you bought a supercharged vehicle, JUST put premium in your car..... You want to a car that runs off regular buy a LS


but *sigh* to answer your question it wont hurt your engine if you use regular, however if you decide to floor it you will get engine knock.....

listen man im really embarressed to say this, but.......ive never put premium in mine!!! im not proud of it, but unfortunately i havent had a job in a while and have been charging up the gas.....im down almost a grand since sept, and that doesnt include the cash ive spent lol....got about 8500 miles so if i used premium all the time i would have to take a mortgage hah....anyways to answer both questions, the car runs absolutely perfect, still fast as ****, and yea i usually (not always) but usually beat the cars i race (and thats with 87 octane) NO KNOCKING EVER!! engine knocking is what u get when an engine is only designed to use higher octane gas and u put lower octane...basically sounds like what it is....sounds like banging or 'knocking' from the engine and sometimes can be pretty loud...but NOT from the cobalt

i knew that the cobalt ss doesnt need hihg octane its bullshit
GM wouldnt reccomend it unless they knew it needed 91 +

that doesnt mean it wont perform better with higher octance....were lucky, some cars dont perform better with higher octance just get better mileage...and thats only some cars.....supposedly our car is actually faster with higher octance

i dont doubt that, but the car should still perform perfect with 87
thats what gm gaurantee's
so i dnno when i get the car ill pump both if i dont notice a difference ill stick with 87
im not lookin to race the world and shave 1 tenth of a milo second off with expensive gas

The car's manual states that 91 is recommended while it will function on 87 with a decrease in performance.

Running low octane with a F/I motor is never ideal.

If you're not willing to spring for premium, don't buy the car. Simple as that. I ran 87 in my Cavi and the spark plugs looked like ass when I changed them so I switched to 93. HUGE difference next time I swapped them.

Seriously, do the math, most places it's $0.20 cents more for premium. Times 13 gallons if you're TOTALLY on empty. So that's $2.60 per tank. Wow. Huge savings there. You might save $125 over the course of a year. To me, that's chump change compared to what you're doing to your fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs, etc. by running **** gas through the car. That's not even taking into consideration performance on higher octane. I ran nothing but 93 through the SS/SC, pulled up to the pumps literally almost on empty and found out they were out of 93, so I put a tank of 89 in and there was a NOTICABLE difference. The car ran like ****. It took 2 full cycles of 93 and a dose of fuel system cleaner to get it back to where it was on 93.

I have a question about fuel too...sorry to change the subject, But what do you guys think about running 100 octane or race fuel when at the track?

Yeah in the long rin it is cheaper to run with premium gas. If you play attention to your fuel economy its a lot lower with the cheap stuff, it burns faster ... On top of that why would you want to put regular in a supercharged car your timing will not be the same because the computer will compensate for the lower octane. If you were a pro football player would you want a diet that consisted of cheap stuff??? Mostly like not ... try the test and see for yourself.

Ok why did you post this question when you are waiting for someone to tell you what you want to hear.... if you have no job and your poor and cant afford gas **** dont own a brand new sports car.


YES if you use 87 octane you will get engine knock, its not always noticable but your knock sensor will detect it and retard your timing hense a DECREASE in performance.


Look man its like marrying a hot chick, and instead of feading her healthy foods... you feed her macdonalds everyday... IM sure for a while you wont notice much.... and im sure it does the job when the lights are off.... In the end I suppose its your decisio, do you want to be driving a hot chick in 2 years.... or an overweight chick whos hooked on macdonalds???

I know thats a pretty harsh analagy but I do not know how else to put it.... but if your still wanting to put regular in your car, could you please do us all a favour and sell your car to someone who deserves it and go out and buy a tiburon or something ?? lol

If the manual states that 91(PREMIUM FUEL) is suggested then I'd run it exclusively. Its really not that huge of a price diff. If ur too cheap to spend a few bucks more for better gas then why the hell did u buy a SS S/C?!

Crap fuel on a FI car will do no good to the plugs. I ran solid 94 octane on my scooby for 75k now and recently changed the plugs. they were in very good shape aside from the usual wear on the electrode.

Running 100 octane wouldn't change much. You won't notice any HP gains unless u tune for it. But I'm sure it would make it a lil peppier.

i put premium in all year around! in the end a few more bucks is not goign to break my bank book!... and if anythgin it save you money in the long run if the chaper gas does **** up ur engine

UHHHH This car is meant for premium gas...... FI cars run much better with premium gas... my owners manual says premium gas... stop being cheap and give your car what it needs.... yes you can put 87 in there but you will lose HP and you will see knock after awhile....

Personally I try to find a Sunoco so I can get 94 Octane...

High performance engine = high performance gas. Especially in the hotter months. Your pistons will love you for it. 91 minimum.

Honestly, if you cant afford and extra 2.60 per fill up, then you have no buisness driving a sports car.

because if you cant afford an extra 2.60 per fill up, then chances are you cant afford an extra 10.00 for Synthetic oil, and chances are you arent going to be able to replace the tires when they get worn out, or to replace the clutch when you burn it up.

Spend a little extra cash and know that you are getting the most for your money.

Besides, in my experiance 87 octane (or 86 for you high elevation folks) Evaporates like water, meaning **** poor fuel economy.
