Sorry but your engine control CPU will detune performance when running a lower octane. Yes it won't hurt the car but it will reduce performance. GM recommends 91 so quit being cheap and give your car what it wants.

My dad always asks why I put 91 in but for about $2.00 I know my engine is running at full potential.

As for the 14.6, could have been ideal conditions or most likely bs. Either way be a man and put 91 in your baby.

PS that McDonalds analogy was hilarious.

Hmmm... While I dont doubt the car will run on Cheap gas, there is a reason GM specified high octane gas in the owners manual.

Just because you buddy says it dosent make it right.
What if he told you it was perfectly acceptable to have sex with a cat? Does that make it right? No.

You have the ability too but you shouldnt. Sorry for the crude analogy (And to all you cat lovers) but just because A friend tells you too, dosent make it right.

Call your Chevy service department, talk to a GM Performance technician, and ask them what they think of you putting low octane gas in your SS/SC Cobalt.

Your gonna do what your gonna do, as it sounds like you already had your mind made up when you started this thread, but I'm sure most people who know even a little about cars would say its a bad idea.

Good luck!

Hmm my daddy says boys are supposed to like girls but tommy down the street likes billy alot, maybe billy and tommy will like me alot too???(for instance)

Seriously, do the math, most places it's $0.20 cents more for premium. Times 13 gallons if you're TOTALLY on empty. So that's $2.60 per tank. Wow. Huge savings there. You might save $125 over the course of a year. To me, that's chump change compared to what you're doing to your fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs, etc. by running **** gas through the car. That's not even taking into consideration performance on higher octane. I ran nothing but 93 through the SS/SC, pulled up to the pumps literally almost on empty and found out they were out of 93, so I put a tank of 89 in and there was a NOTICABLE difference. The car ran like ****. It took 2 full cycles of 93 and a dose of fuel system cleaner to get it back to where it was on 93.
Did PA have all sorts of problems with Gas Quality Control??

Just wondering. I'm at 5000 feet. Can I only get 94 octane at a sunoco? If so then I'm stuck to 91 because I only know of one sunoco and it's 45 mins away. thanx

Guys leave him be the guy cant even spell if he wants to put regular in the car let him put regular... I just cant get over how someone can hurt their car for 2 dollars a fill up..... Probably less when you factor in how a tank of premium drives farther....

Thats also kinda funny, cuz when i was looking at an 06' SS S/C, the dealer told me that i would HAVE to put 91+ gas in it. also, if you look on the chevy website, it says "Lower grade gas may be used, but driver will feel a noticable power loss" My verdict: use only 91+

MY verdict is that this guy is the kinda guy who used to drive a cavalier and thought that adding decals added 10 hp a pop.

Well, I run premium, and guess what? No knock, gobs of power, and GREAT milage. The engine is designed to run fine at 89 and optimally at 91+.

The SS/SC manual is very clear about this. You know, because we actually own the car (and the manuals that are included with it). The GM engineers who built the car know better than your cheap-*** buddy.

i love this board guys a lower octane dosent hurt a f/i engine now on a charged you will notice a power loss but engine damage very doubtfull due to the fine engine managment on our cars and it dosent affect those sparken plugs either
