I really hope that isn't the case after my motor is done being built. I don't want to start a hard pull and then have to cross my fingers as I shift and hope it doesn't go BOOM lol.

Aftermarket sleeves if you can afford/aquire them, I have no idea who manufactures anything off the shelf anymore, been a while since I owned a Cobalt. When you have the sleeves installed, I'm sure this will be a given but just in case, make sure they are honed with a torque plate, call around and see if any local machine shops have an ecotec torque plate, not many do. Whoever's pistons you end up installing, make sure you use their recommended clearances to a tee. Also shoot for the ring manufacturer's recommended rings and gaps. I've used OEM bearings on the rods and mains to GM's specs with no issues, be sure to check those especially if you end up line honing the mains.

There are also vendors out there (not sure about this forum) that will assemble built short blocks and not follow basic procedures as well. Reputation is the first thing I look at when shopping around for one.

Take for instance a company like Hinson where my friend Greg called them out for doing just such a thing.

Ebay Item 140411286826 New hi-perf piston/rod/ring set for 2.0 Ecotec New high-performance Diamond forged pistons, with hi-po rings on shot-peened LSJ rods. This setup was removed from a built engine that never made it to the test cell. Look at the piston domes and teflon skirts: never fired - still has the assembly grease visible. Pistons are standard bore for 2.0 litre - will produce 9.5-1 compression ratio. All new rings, pins and retainers. Rods are OEM LSJ, but they have been shot-peened and fitted with trick A1 3/8" rod bolts. This setup could get a street or Sportsman to 300-400 horsepower. If you are not 100% satisfied with these beauties upon receipt, I will refund and pay return shipping. Match it up with factory cranks and blocks...on sale elsewhere on eBay from PartsOutWest. 6 HOURS TO GO on this auction
