I could see why they would not warranty because you are not supposed to have wheel hop or produce wheel hop with the car.
It would be no different if you lost the clutch say after 5000 miles because you kept dumping the clutch.
Just my opinion.

On the contrary, there are a few member's who have been able to get the clutch replaced under warranty. My understanding is that there has to be no other signs of abuse, and you have to be a dick about it..............the later probably helps.

How can it hurt the car? When you downshift without givin a some gas and the car jerks back? Is that bad?

Another FYI,
Some people have a bad habit if slightly resting their left foot on the clutch pedal while driving in city traffic. It doesn't necessarily wear out your clutch faster, but as Psykostevo pointed out, it will slip just a wee bit and increase the glazing effect.
Make sure your clutch foot is off the pedal when you're not using it to change gears.
Another habit a lot of people have, and I know it's bad on RWD transmissions, is leaving your hand resting on the shifter while driving. This puts excess strain on the bushings and syncros. I know this is difficult to avoid with the Cobalt because the buttheads at GM didn't put an armrest in the manual trans cars, but try to avoid it as much as possible.
Let the clutch out gradually as if you were upshifting. This will slowly bring the RPMs up to the rotating speed of the transmission.
And yes, any jerking is bad, unless you're at home, alone.

Best way I learned was downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. You will do that a lot anyways, and once you have mastered it you can do that with any downshift. Just DONT do the 2nd to 1st downshift. It is really harsh and because of the gearing you will be thrashed around somewhat.

i usually put my hand on my gf's thigh to rest my hand when not using the shifter so I avoid resting it on the shifter. Agree with slowly engaging the clutch (downshifting) to slow you down. I know some people use rev matching to accomplish the same thing but im not sure why cus if you rev to high you don't get any slowing benefit and if your too low you get jerked around when it does engage. Just engage slowly and your good
