I believe they changed the engine in 2009 model year. I think you can use any 2.2l from a cobalt before that. The number of doors doesnt matter and neither does the transmission setup as far as i know. Just make sure you get the 2.2l and not the 2.4l from the sport/ SS/NA model.

you can use one from further back as well, i believe you can pick them up as far back as from 02 as long as they are the ecotec 2.2 UP UNTIL 07 you should be ok.

i used royal purple oil and didnt understand how oils heat cycle and what it does to them. Royal purple heat cycles and breaks down easy...I ended up wearing down and spinning a rod bearing. I also accidently shifted into 2nd instead of 4th (driving like an idiot on the freeway...coming around a corner at too high a speed and grabbed wrong gear) and overspun the engine...tapped all 16 valves and gave enough room around the guide to leak and burn oil....although when i did it my buddy said i shot a 4 ft flame out the back of the car

I have pics of the internal damage...none of it was immediate...wore down over some time and one day just **** on me

well it all started when i was taking my exhaust manifold off and broke the stud in the head well when i tried to drill it out from the front side reaching to the back side with a mirror i drilled threw the block and into the oil passage so when i cranked it over the oil was shooting out the side of the block instead of lubricating the cams dummy me so what i did was run a sleeve to cover the side hole that i drilled and jb weld it well see if it holds.

if you just need a head i got one layin around...only downside to it is that where the coolant hose goes to on it, my friend accidentally broke it. i took the piece and super glued it back on, but im going to add a little JB weld to be 100% sure its alright. so if you want it ill do $75 plus shipping, all you need is cams and the things that lock the cams down

well i took the head to the machine shop and they fixed it but now the block is the question i jb welded the block so well see how long it last before it starts dumping the oil back on the ground i may need a new block before to long but the car is up and running good now so well see how long it last just because i drilled threw the block and not the head into the oil passage

that head is garbage then. the cam caps (what holds down the cam) is specific per engine. they actually make it but bolting the hole pieces on and cutting the hole through...thats why they are numbered.

I REPEAT DO NOT USE CAM CAPS FROM A DIFF CYL HEAD EVER!!!!

Exactly, just the same way you never swap main bearing caps between enignes. They are matched to the head or block. If you need to get new caps, then the head/block needs to be line-honed. Not ideal, and quite costly.
