2006 Cobalt Automatic, I want a Turbo and 400hp! Anyone wanna help?
Hello to all! My warranty finally expired on my Cobalt and I really would like to make this baby a Turbocharged beast... There are many problems with this idea, for instance I don't think they make a turbo for an automatic 2.2L. Also, my car is a 4-door, I read somewhere (though I don't know where) that the transmissions/computers are different in the 4-doors than the 2-doors.
To be frank, the only reason I want a turbo is because the stock versions between charged and turbo'd SS Cobalts, is the turbo has more bang for its buck. I'm all about buying the best part the first time instead of buying something that I'll want to upgrade later. I'm fairly decent with a car. Unfortunately, the other car I worked with extensively is my old 67 Camaro so anything with a computer is going to be new to me.
In the end of this project, I want a street legal, automatic Cobalt with around 400hp, though I'm guessing I'll only be able to crank out 340-350 hp realistically speaking. Let me know what you all think. I mean list all the upgrades/companies that are best I can get my hands on (headers, exhaust, race chip, etc).
Thanks for helping,
Mitch

Ya, I'm slightly worried about my tranny too, but according to a few people it can handle the hp not to mention by the time my tranny gets blown, I would have already upgraded it anyways. I am talking about a 400hp Cobalt eventually, I'm gonna be adding upgrades every month, maybe two months.

well i would get some forged internals and then a zzp stage 2 kit with the extended tip turbo. you might want to look into sleeves since you have the gen 1 block. I just put my forged internals in this past weekend and I'm still breaking it in so I can turn my boost up to 20 psi. I'm shooting for 360 to the wheels. I believe the auto tranny can handle 350 hp. if you go to gmtunersource.com they have build books that were helpful for me.

You will need a built motor and tranny. You can PM Tundraboarder666 as his motor is built/turbo and he's in process of bulding a 4t45e with LSD as we speak.he'll be at 25 psi once the trans goes in.He can help you with any other questions as well

Ill let you know when my manual blows up. These things seem pretty tough. I would imagine the auto can do the same thing as long as you take care of the heat, but IDK I can only tell you that the manual f23 seems to hold up just fine against 400.

Ya, I got screwed over. The dealership I got my Cobalt from said that I was getting the 2.4L in my Cobalt. I still have the paper that was stuck on the window showing all the equipment and top right it says 2.4L...

I just got an email back from Hahn saying that they would turbo, chip, tune, dyno and re-build my engine for around $5,000-6,000, labor included. Sounds like a fair deal even though I was hoping to get my hands dirty...

If I was you I would go with the zzp stg2 turb ext tip and of course up ur internals. get a tranny cooler and look into building up the tranny. the exhaust well 3" all the way around would be best i think... i got mine from zzp and i havent installed but heard good things about it. so its possible I dont know how u will hook up but i hope u do it. I can plans for my car but no where near 400 im more like 300 haha.

My biggest suggestion is learning as much as you can about forced induction and how engine management systems work. I have some write ups as well to get you in the right direction. If you want the book suggestions and the write up links, let me know.
Honestly, you're going to be spending thousands of dollars if you are trying to do it right and even after you "finish" you'll be spending even more. Its going to turn into a money pit and you should understand this before even attempting this. I don't know what kind of work you do and how much money you make but I'm assuming you bought a 2.2 Cobalt because it was economical for you at the time of your purchase. Doing this however, won't be economical. It will be a headache, you'll have downtime so just hope you have lots of resources, money, time and pain killers.
I'm telling you this so you understand what you're up against. Its not impossible...nothing with cars is really impossible but is it something logical for what you are capable of doing is another question. I figure this answer is better than the typical "yeah build your motor, y0" and linking you to ZZP's website.

I got the car because my parents refused to pay for my insurance on a Camaro/Corvette and lets face it, I was never going to buy a Ford or Dodge. I was in college, and I wanted something zippy and this was in 06, so I bought the best 4-door Cobalt I could; the SS 4 door wasn't out yet. I had read that the 4-door has a better turning radius and rigid chassis. My brother has a 2-door Cobalt SS and I've gotta say, I feel like mine is better even though a little slower. I still wouldn't trade up for an SS, unless it was for the 4 door. Which is why I'm planning on all these parts. I know forced induction is pricey, complicated, and unbelievingly stressful but in the end, I just want a fast car. I could be wrong, but if I upgraded everything, except the engine and tranny, I could get maybe an extra 100 hp...

I think its funny some peoples misconception of the 2-door vs 4-door cobalts. Engine, tranny, computer systems are exactly the same between the two. Weight is even very similar, the 2 door base weights like 2680 and my base 4 door weighs 2751. I think the 4 door balts look bad ass kited.
