Aluminium shaving on oil filter
So, I did the 1st oil change on my base 2.2 (3400 mi) and noticed fairly good sized
alu shavings on the filter as I pulled it out. Being a mechanic I know this is not a good
thing. What I would to know is if chevy has any T.S.B's and/or if anyone else has
experinced this and what the resolution was. Thanks:

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
On rare occasions, machining debris may be found on the oil filter element during the vehicle's first oil change. This debris consists of small boring chips and milling burrs from the oil passage that is between the oil pump and oil filter.
Recommendation/Instructions:
If this condition is encountered, replace the engine oil and filter. No additional repairs should be attempted since this debris does not affect the reliability or durability of the engine.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

I ran into the same thing on my Cobalt. First oil change at 1,000 miles had a few metal shavings in the oil filter. I'm now at about 12,000 miles and about five oil changes later with no problems. I've found no more metal in the filter and the car runs great.
