CEL Came on

Hello everyone,

Last night my CEL came on for the first time. I took it to the dealer and they basically told me that with my AEM cold air intake it could be a number of things. They checked everything including the MAF. The only thing they did tell me was the engine was running rich. They wouldn't tell me the actual code. They told me to put it back to stock configuration and drive it around to see if it comes back on. ( They did clear the code for me). Other than that it was going to cost me to troubleshhot because of aftermarket intake. Has anyone else had this problem? I have had the intake on for 5 months and this is the first time this has happened. I did read in the owners manual that water on the electronics could cause this or the gas cap. It has been raining here for 4 days straight, but I just don't know. Please can somebody give me some insight?

I've had my Injen CAI for a few months and the CEL came on after like 300 miles.. Had the code cleared numerous times by both the dealership and my tuner shop and the bitch comes back... I'm thinking of going Short Ram or back to stock.. Who knows..

GM Goodwrench will not do warranty work on aftermarket parts. They should at least tell you what code you had.

You can get scanned by anyone with a scanner. Autozone can do it for you. It is more then likely a fuel trim code, which is common, and isn't something you really need to worry about.

Sounds like you are having the famous intake CEL from having a CAI. I had one for about 2K then it relearned itself. Plus more air means your engine needs more fuel. But our stupid ECUs make our cars which. Well any car I've modded does that.

Not really smart going to a dealership with aftermarket parts. They could make a memo on the database that you have aftermarket parts. Just really be careful.

No. In fact, there is absolutely no reason to ever unplug your battery when you get a CEL. I hate hearing when people do that. Get it scanned and cleared properly.

i have an AEM CAI as well and i throw p0170 system running lean Bank 1, it comes and goes, usually comes when the weather is shitty, like raining or cool... it really isnt a big deal, the car just notices a tiny little bit of extra air and it throws th code.. i had an intake on my car when my car had 1000 miles on it, it now has 24000 and my cars runs just as fine as it did the day i bought it

Well, obviously he's had it scanned at the dealer and figured out what the problem was. They cleared it for him, as previously stated.

My suggestion was to have the ECU relearn w/ the air intake installed by unplugging the battery for a while.

I hate it when people jump to conclusions, especially when all the details are there to be read.

No, they didn't tell him what the code was. They told him to return it stock otherwise they wouldn't work on it.

I did not jump to any conclusions, and I'm curious why you are so angry.

And there is no such thing as "relearn". The only thing you are doing is depriving the ECM of it's operating memory, which will HELP it to run better.

I was mimicking your post, actually. You seemed rather angry at me for even suggesting such a stupid idea.

My dealership is cool as hell... They didnt memo anything and i'm buddies with one of the guys there so he wouldn't screw me.. But anyway my CEL all of a sudden went away after 4,000+ miles. I'm a little confused so we will see what happens now... Is the ECU a "learning" ecu really? I'm happy its gne now tho.

well, I hate to sound like a retard here, but on the coloradofans forum, a few of the guys used the spectra intake parts and just used the stock MAF housing just cut around it and made a home made intake from it, or they had an exhaust shop mandrel bend some piping the same size as the MAF housing and used that housing with the MAF and attached it to the piping and then put a filter on...

We've found out on that forum that the GM MAFs are really sensitive and the stock MAF housing in the intake is best to keep, any other tubing won't hurt it.

Thanks for all the help guys. It has not come back since the dealership cleared the code. I don't think I will be going back there even if it does come back. A buudy of mine has a reader. As for the CEL going away after awhile I was told by the mechanic at the dealership that after a certain amount of "trips"( driving the car for a period of time)- don't exactly know how long, but the System will clear itself. I just don't know how true it is and I don't like driving around with the CEL on. Anyway, it doesn't seem like a big problem and I appreciate the help

Technically if they did the work under warranty you are not intitled to the code. You are not the customer GM is.

If you paid for the diagnosis then you are the customer and are intitled to all info including the code.

That said I have never had a GM Dealer refuse to give me the code it was showing. If you pull your cars history at a GM Dealer the Code should be listed as they had to document it for GM to pay the warranty claim.

Take out the MAF, clean it off with injector cleaner, let it evaporate totally, install it, clear the code, buy an ice cream cone.

I did that and 7k miles later, it hasn't illuminated, with the exclusion of a small evap leak because I wasnt paying attention at the pump and didnt click up the cap.

Its pretty dumb that they told you the engine was running rich. An intake should make it go lean, if anything. Thats the code I get sometimes.
