I ran a stock 2.4, man, against my 2.2 man, I/E and I hung with him. We shut down at 95 and his front bumper was at my drivers door. The 2.4 may have 26 more hp stock for stock, but the torque difference is minimal, 155 VS 163. But as far as stock for stock, same tranny setup and based on sheer power, 2.4 is better, that's why it's called an SS...

off idle, the 2.4 actually makes less power than the 2.2 once teh VVT starts doing it's magic the motor really comes alive. if you wind out a 2.4 it just feels a lot "sportier" than a 2.2 also, coil on plug ignition, forged interals, few other goodies, it's just an overall more performance based engine. with that said, the 2.2 is a lot quieter and a hair smoother.

I own a bone-stock 2.2 and have driven a 2.4 with Injen CAI, both auto. The 2.4 does have more top-end, but it's not like going from a 2.2 to a 2.0SC. Off-the-line, they're close, but the 2.4 will pull on the 2.2 at about 1/8 mile, I'd guess. I'd like to run them against each other AT THE TRACK to see 'exactly' how they compare, though.

Yep, the dyno graphs tell the story between the two much better than comparing peak torque. If you compare the peak torque ratings for both, it seems like little difference in 155lbs-ft vs 163lbs-ft.
Looking at the dyno graph, we can see that the 2.4 starts making 150lbs-ft at an early 2400rpm and stays above 150lbs-ft all the way till 5800rpm. The 2.2 hits 150lbs-ft at 3800rpm and only stays there till 5100rpm.
Also looking at the 2.4 plot, it does make it's peak hp at 6200 but it doesn't spiral downward right after that. It keeps making power all the way to redline.
The only real difference between the two is the VVT. I wouldn't be surprised to see VVT on all Ecotecs in a couple years.

it should be close but he should still pull on you, you're gonna need just a little more power to actually outpower one and not just beat the driver.
i think u'd have alot better chance with a good header too

One thing I noticed above...
The stock automatic trans in these two cars does have one difference.
The SS model automatic has a higher ratio differential. The idea being to take the extra power and spin the wheels a little faster at the same RPM.

yesterday I had the chance to drive all the cobalt models(ls,lt,SS,SS/Sc with stage 2 and K&N) and after these tests,I would say that the SS/SC is totally in an other world but when it come to make the diference between the 2.2 and the 2.4(both with auto),there is not a huge difference. The major diff between to is on handling but for the rest with my 250$ springs and my 17' wheels im happy with my car.

a 5 speed F23s have 3.84 ratio. I have said this numerous times before but Chevrolet.com has lots of errors on it. Go the gmcanada.com for the stright goods

No Not Really But The 2.4 Has Some More High End Power And Torque, but Not Much...i Have Raced 2 A Auto And A 5 Speed And I Beat Them Both The 5 Speed Is A Little Faster Than The Auto But Not Much,so Basically A 06 5 Speed Ls Should Beat A 06 5 Speed Ss Coupe Any Day,its A Weight Thing The Ss May Have More Power But It Has More Weight Than A Ls Alot So There

26 hp more than makes up for any weight difference between the two. You caught a guy that couldn't drive. Anybody that test drove both before buying knows this.

that 5-speed SS driver couldn't drive then. I can see you beating an auto those have been known to run a 16-15.5. But not a five speed sorry best i've seen one ls do is a 15.6 ,Several 2.4's have done low 15's, like 15.2ish.
