Cold Air Intake

Is there 2 types of CAI's? I talked to a car mechanic and he told me not to get the one that goes into the fender because if it rains and I go through a puddle it will suck water into the engine. he told me to get an intake that goes where the stock one is. opinions?

umm... cold air is in the fender... short ram isn't but if you have an ss/sc it has the filter in the bumper already... check out the xtc intake, you can still pop on the stock lid to keep water out when driving around normally and take it off to cruise or race for full performance... also gives you 10hp dyno proven.

The intake that goes where the stock one is called a short ram intake. cold air is the one in the fender.

I had a grand prix were i made the cold air go into the fender and went through puddles with no problem. The only time it would be a problem is if you go into a huge puddle that practically sinks the front end of your car.

which one gives more HP short ram or cold air intake?

i have the injen CAI that goes into fender where stock was and drove in bad rain.....no prob =)....cold air gives more overall hp but at high end of rpm....short ram gives slightly less but better throttle response on the low end

You just might have to take the wheel off. if thats a bother then leave it as a short ram air all the time., you won't knowtice that much difference anyways

but is there an intake that i can switch from cold air to short ram? taking off the tire isnt a big problem

They are called "Hybrid" or "Complete CAI". But i havent seen any for the Cobalts yet all i see is SRI and CAI.

Hey Guys! I wanted to know the same thing but didnt want to get gangbanged by all of you for opening another intake thread. So, um, I dont have one yet and still hesitant. I want the gains but I dont want problems.

1. I drive in alot of rain.

2. I drive in the VERY cold Ontario winter.

Would I have any problems with lets say K&N? Input please? Does it change anything if its way down in the fender? I want to be able to install and not worry about it anymore.

Yes.

It comes with two tubes, one for a SRI, and then an extension to make it into a CAI. If you do get the Injen, when you are putting it on, you can see that your stock intake, pretty much is a CAI, just plastic and sucky, lol! (No pun intended)

It's a good investment. I've only had it as a CAI as it is summer now, but I could be changing it over to a SRI when winter comes. Unless you plan on taking the balt for a swim in some puddles I wouldn't worry about hydrolocking the engine.

The filter has to be completely submerged in water for it to suck water in and cause damage. But if you truely feel uncomfortable, go with a SRI. Get the INJEN!

YO! U Boat COMMANDERS! your driving a car not sub. If you are sinking your vehicle into puddles that are as deep as the front wheels, then no type of CAI is going to save you.

The HP gains between the 2 styles are to low to matter.

Also take into consideration this, do you really what to rebiuld your CAI everytime it rains because your affriad of a puddle?

Also if you own an SS, you are limited as to where you can put your filter due to space restrictions under the hood.

Try this: Get the normal one and put a K & N Filter bag over the filter. You can spray the bag with Scotch Brand Water Proofing spray. Then you don't need to worry about it.

I used this method on my 97 4x4 for deep water crossing and off road use. It worked great with no air restrictions.

please show me a dyno where it gives you 10hp every time, and i want to see a dyno sheet of right before intake and then right after so the conditions are the same

on an ss/sc you already have a "cold air intake" the only way you could have a SRI is if the intake was sucking air in from the engine compartment because it didnt go where the stock one did

Get the dyno sheet from Cobalt-addiction they did it the same day within one hr of each other (the pulls) and averaged out 10 whp and 8 wtq ... I saw the dyno sheet friday... so I know its right... they dyno at mustang magic.. which is quite a reputable shop with a good dyno.

Yes. I got mine from TTR.com (a vendor, hint VENDOR section) and I got it within 4 days of placing the order.

hey man my apologies to you i didnt know there was an intake like that out, so i cant argue with you on that one, i was thinking it was the traditional style CAI

Denny Medeiros did a before and after on the same day with his AEM intake on the dyno and found some pretty sweet gains out of it. Check it out on the front page. I personnaly didnt get one because it looks like trouble and nobody EVER answered any of my questions.

i dont have the sheet any more cuz i used a dyno at my friends shop but the injen gave me a true 6.5 hp to the wheels so i am happy

gains will vary from car to car and dyno to dyno... I know its true... but I did see the dyno sheets so I can't argue with that... plus variations in temp humidity elevation will all yield different gains... so you can never really say "10 hp with this intake proven" but they all will give you some type of hp gain.
