Uhhh? Whats wierd about them? there's a positive terminal, a negative terminal and the only big difference is that the battery is in the trunk instead of the engine compartment.

Basically the reason why you always want to disconnect the negative first is because if you disconnect the power cable, the unit is still grounded... meaning you touch the metal, you can run the risk of a not so tiny shock. Its better to unground the battery being careful not to ground yourself to anything.
I have been jolted a view times by a few car batteries through my car audio days. Didn't really burn much, but it left that burnt hair smell that I couldn't tell where it was coming from.

Where do you have your MAF located? If you got rid of your stock airbox, you need a new place to mount the MAF...i suggest using a 6" section of 3" exhaust pipe...and please don't try cutting a slit in the filter lol. Air doesn't flow throught the MAF for SH*T that way lol. Try disconnecting the ground to your battery like previously stated.
I had done the cone filter on the end of the stock rubberflex tube..with 6" pipe..it works great...BUT...i also took off the stock flat box that sits atop the Throttle Body, and just ran dryer duct (i know i know, how ghetto...but hey, when you live off $100/month..you explain how to eat and live while saving for a $300 intake..pfft..oh yeah, don't have kids or get divorced, it's expensive!) So the dryer duct seemed to work ok...pulled real good after 3300rpm, but before that the flat box musta helped with torque cuz it was a dog..oh and i went through 1/8 tank of gas in 10 miles of 45mph driving haha. a few spirited sprints..but easy moving for the most part...that's HORRIBLE if ya don't know lol.

look on ur maf and make sure the air is pointing to towards your throttle body if its not then the maf is turned backwards and can cause some of these problems....
