When you put the engine back in the car, run the engine through several rotations on the starter first without the fuel or ignition hooked up yet. This will allow the fresh oil to pump through the block and get some pressure built up. It will also show you any problems the engine might have even without it running under its own power.

my dad said that i should pull the valve cover off when i change the oil and pour half a quart over each cam to make sure they are well lubed as well. then un hook the injectors and the ignition and turn the motor a few times for the oil pressure. ( all of that after i get some oil on the cyl walls. )

yay or nay?

Over the cams would be fine. I disagree with pouring oil into the spark plug holes. Nothing should ever go in there. I saw a kid spray WD-40 in there once, which basically destroyed it. Simply cold cranking (running the starter only without fuel or ignition) will get oil to the pistons just fine.

Pouring a small amount of oil in the cylinders works good if there is a possibility of you having a ring leak. Other than that, it's not really necessary.

Agreed with halfcent, disable fuel and ignition, crank it a few times to get the oil pressure up and fire it up.
