Gas mileage

I have a 2.2 cobalt coupe 5 speed. The whole purpose of this car is gas mileage. I am about to purchase either a cobalt ss or camaro z28 or ss as a weekend car. I havent really sone anything, other than the air box mod which seemed to help a little. When i drive the car easy i am able to get 40 MPG but thats 80-90% highway miles. I have my tire pressure at 34 pounds. Thats on the 15 inch wheels. Whats the highest pressure i can go and still be safe? Also, is there anything else that i can do to get better mileage that is free?

tune your car when it becomes available and get an air intake of some sort

intake, exhaust, larger wheels, tuning when available, nothing off ebay that promises the same.

as much as i hate to say it, i felt like a total ass when i saw the mileage on the n/a cobalt ss, its the same (maybe even slightly better) than ours.

we need vvt on the 2.2 bad, someone needs to turn this back into the economy car that it should be.

I have only AEM CAI and I get about 25 average on the gauge. I put CAI on 2 days after I bought car so these numbers are right. I have 2.4 VVT also so I dunno what I am doing wrong ^ ^ I do mostly highway miles

The sticker might say the 2.4 gets the same mileage as the base but that is only cruising at highway speeds and only comparing autos. The base 5speed will beat the 2.4 driving in the city by a good bit. I drive mostly city and take it easy and get 33mpg. An auto 2.4 would probably be lucky to get 28mpg in the city. A way to get more mpg for free is to lighten the car. Take out as much weight as possible, that is why the Cavalier does better than a Cobalt, around 400 lbs difference.

so for example, if we take out the spare tire in the back. we can possibly see a slight jump in MPG?

BTW: i have a 2.2L LS w/ Auto. I know for a fact when i floor it, the rev-limiter kicks in and i loose exactly 3 miles worth of gas.

oh man, hitting the limiter? ur nuts.

on another note....there is an aftermarket company that is going to come out with a VVT setup for the 2.2L soon....but i cant say too much about who, where, and when.

i dont hit it all the time. last week my high school had its state testing, and i have already passed it. so the back street to the schools football stadium was clear, no cops and i hit the rev-limiter at 5500 i think....i dont remember, i was just pissed and sad. the car sounded great and it lost its breath...damn

i feel stupid for asking but what exactly will a VVT do for us?

i know the 2.4 guys have it, dont understand whats so great about it.

With mine I am up to 22.5mpg. As the weather warms up so does my mpg. My trek to work has my averaging around 45mph. And I am 50/50 with running it hard and taking it easy. Now my wifes car is up to 23.8mpg and she is about 95% highway and she likes to gun it when she gets the chance. And both of our cars are bare bone stock(right now )

So you think a Cavalier weighs 2400lbs??? LOL.

Where is your proof of what you're saying about the 2.2 getting better milage in the city???

Before I bought the GT, I took the GF's base auto Pursuit for the drive to work to measure fuel economy compared to my Grand Am V6. It's a lot of stop of go driving and I averaged 18.8mpg which was considerably more than the Grand Am. Now with my GT 2.4, the same route over a week I averaged 22.9mpg. Has anyone else done a real test with both cars or will we just throw around opinions based on thin air???

Bottom line is the 2.4 and 2.2 have the same manual tranny with the same gearset. If you keep both under 3000rpm, they are going to get the same economy.

VVT basically allows timing to work as if there were two different sets of camshafts in the engine. You've probably heard of people throwing in a "hotter" cam for more power. Normally, you can have a cam that either increases low end, miderange or high end only. Most cams are set to give you a decent amount of all three ranges. VVT allows one cam to give you lots of low end, midrange and top end.

on hondas, yes. but on chevy VVT engines, its all about altering the actual timing of the camshaft, by either delaying or advancing for optimised fuel economy and power. the biggest difference you notice in this method of VVT is fuel economy, rather than power.

The Ecotec VVT alters the position of the cams in relation to the crank using an electronically controlled hydraulic actuator. The description you provide is for the pushrod V6 VVT.

Instead of taking out the spare tire (which is never a good idea), get it filled with helium instead of air. It reduces the weight of the tire by quite a bit because the helium is lighter than air.

i was trying to describe the same setup you were. the pushrod verson that brings in different cam lobes is the one that adds power, reduces fuel economy.

vvt

I don't think I would want vvt because the timing chain will be getting stressed more leading to earlier wearing out of the chain, possible chain tensioner problems, and vvt system is something else to fail.

Found out why my mileage sucked ***** on the way down to Kingston and back... all the tires were a wee bit low... like 15-17lbs low...

that'll teach me to pay more attention!

Mileage is back up in the upper 30's.

its an advance in technology. thats your preference and thats fine, but if there are so many advances available, i would use them to save a buck or two.
