I took a 200 mile roadtrip a week after i got my balt... so about a month and a half ago now... and made it on a quarter tank of gas... mileage was somewhere around 39 or 40... it kicked ASS!!! right now i'm getting about 32-33 driving back and forth from work and school... it's pretty well 50/50 on the city and highway miles... so i guess it's not doing too bad! i just hope a supercharger comes out for this 2.2 soon... i'm feeling power withdrawals... it sucks...

How are you saving money when the car would cost alot more with VVT and when it breaks will cost you some more money? Do you think a 2.2 with VVT would get that much better mileage than we get now? I think you will get a wider torque band with VVT but the gas mileage isn't going to improve a noticeable amount. What vvt car gets better mileage than a cobalt ls manual, that weighs as much as it does? The only cars that get better mileage weigh less or have less power.

Are most aftermarket wheels lighter than the stock steel rims on the LS?

I've had the car for a year and get around 31 avg w/80% hwy and 20% city - I keep it just about 5 mph over the posted speed limit most of the time. If I get on the hwy and reset the computer the display is usually around 36-38 while at hwy speed which is great...

However, if I get some lighter wheels, but need a little wider tires will that offset any mileage gain that the thinner tires get you, if they do get you any?

I didn't get an LS for performance, obviously. I got it because it was affordable and gets great mileage. I would like to make it look unique but not if it takes away from the mpg stats.

Great thread!

Besides Driving easy the only FREE gas mileage booster that i can think of would be weight reduction... but ... there isnt much u can take out unless u start pullin the carpet and spare out of the trunk. U can take that plastic off you engine ... but i doubt that will help much.

Inexpensive ways to try, u can get some Lucas fuel treatment products and/or a K&N filter

I have an 06 ss s/c and I get 21-23mpg city and 31-33mpg highway. I'm sure the larger wheels are making a difference...on the highway I usually run 75-80 and still am over 30 mpg.

i feel stupid for asking but what exactly will a VVT do for us?

i know the 2.4 guys have it, dont understand whats so great about it.
ah, the 2.2 has a red line of 6500, just look at your tach.

It will probably cost moe for the "He" than you would save in gas of the course of a year.

i get 29 in the city and 40 on the highway. the biggest thing i do is take it real easy on the driving. i also have my tires inflated to 42 psi. the very best methods to obtain better mpg is found here www.gassavers.org

gmpp exhaust took me from 36-37 to 39-40 driving ~60% highway. I got the touring, sounds really nice, not loud enough for anyone but you to notice, and the tone is deep and mellow, not ricey at all.

I switched to synthetic oil (i used mobil 1, its all I could find locally) that was good for about 1-2 mpg, and the engine will thank you down the road.

As far as free stuff, the air box mod is it. keep your engine cover on, a warmer engine is more effecient, not by much but every little bit helps. I run 35# in my tires, you can probably get 40 safely but your not going to gain much and I'd rather not take that risk.

If you are really concerned with lowering your costs, don't do a thing to your car. I did the math with my exhaust (which I got on sale from crate engine depot [BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!]) and if gas stays at $3 a gallon it would take me 43,000 miles to see a return on my investment. but I like seeing that big number when I check my MPG and the car runs a little better too, so thats how i justify it.

Where is your proof of what you're saying about the 2.2 getting better milage in the city???

Before I bought the GT, I took the GF's base auto Pursuit for the drive to work to measure fuel economy compared to my Grand Am V6. It's a lot of stop of go driving and I averaged 18.8mpg which was considerably more than the Grand Am. Now with my GT 2.4, the same route over a week I averaged 22.9mpg. Has anyone else done a real test with both cars or will we just throw around opinions based on thin air???

Bottom line is the 2.4 and 2.2 have the same manual tranny with the same gearset. If you keep both under 3000rpm, they are going to get the same economy.
If they are both manual tranny I agree. I was comparing a 2.4 auto to a 2.2 manual.

Cavalier and Cobalt weights were on the Chevrolet website, so I don't see why you would be laughing out loud about a Cavalier weighing 400 lbs less than a Cobalt. It is why they are quicker and get better mileage if they have the same engine and transmission. I didn't say 2400lbs though, I said 400 pounds less, the Cav was around 2550 and the Cobalt was something like 2950.

First of all, don't believe what the Chevy website lists. It has a habit of changing and I've seen the same car listed as a different weight on the Canadian and American websites.

My 96 Sunfire GT was 2720lbs with a/c and manual trans.
My 06 G5 Gt is 2786lbs with a/c and manual trans.

Case closed.

I give it more gas than I should, and my MPG meter reads 21.8 right now. I've been doing a bit more highway driving lately too, as I've recently moved further from work.

I get about 24-29 MPG in mine depending on how I drive.. Waiting for tuning to be available... Best thing to do IMO is to allow the car to breath a littl easier (Intake, Header, DP & Exhaust) then get tuning and you'll be ok.... I drive mostly city...

I usually get 33.5 mpg with my 5speed 06 Cobalt ls. My brothers 5speed 04 Cavalier gets a little better mileage and will out accelerate the Cobalt. He has a nicer shifter also. Use to have a 98 Z24 with an auto, quicker but less mileage. The weight and aerodynamics make more difference than a little difference in engine size, especially since the engines are all the same basic design. The VVT should help mileage especially with the auto. Don't know what case you closed. LOL!!!
