Are most aftermarket wheels lighter than the stock steel rims on the LS?
I've had the car for a year and get around 31 avg w/80% hwy and 20% city - I keep it just about 5 mph over the posted speed limit most of the time. If I get on the hwy and reset the computer the display is usually around 36-38 while at hwy speed which is great...
However, if I get some lighter wheels, but need a little wider tires will that offset any mileage gain that the thinner tires get you, if they do get you any?
I didn't get an LS for performance, obviously. I got it because it was affordable and gets great mileage. I would like to make it look unique but not if it takes away from the mpg stats.

I have a 2.2 cobalt coupe 5 speed. The whole purpose of this car is gas mileage. I am about to purchase either a cobalt ss or camaro z28 or ss as a weekend car. I havent really sone anything, other than the air box mod which seemed to help a little. When i drive the car easy i am able to get 40 MPG but thats 80-90% highway miles. I have my tire pressure at 34 pounds. Thats on the 15 inch wheels. Whats the highest pressure i can go and still be safe? Also, is there anything else that i can do to get better mileage that is free?
Inexpensive ways to try, u can get some Lucas fuel treatment products and/or a K&N filter

I have an 06 ss s/c and I get 21-23mpg city and 31-33mpg highway. I'm sure the larger wheels are making a difference...on the highway I usually run 75-80 and still am over 30 mpg.

i dont hit it all the time. last week my high school had its state testing, and i have already passed it. so the back street to the schools football stadium was clear, no cops and i hit the rev-limiter at 5500 i think....i dont remember, i was just pissed and sad. the car sounded great and it lost its breath...damn
i feel stupid for asking but what exactly will a VVT do for us?

It will probably cost moe for the "He" than you would save in gas of the course of a year.

I usually get around 28mpg and on nice stretches of highway doing like 70-80 I get around 38+ mpg. I did manage to get below 8 mpg the ather day when I did a 0-105mph run

i get 29 in the city and 40 on the highway. the biggest thing i do is take it real easy on the driving. i also have my tires inflated to 42 psi. the very best methods to obtain better mpg is found here www.gassavers.org

gmpp exhaust took me from 36-37 to 39-40 driving ~60% highway. I got the touring, sounds really nice, not loud enough for anyone but you to notice, and the tone is deep and mellow, not ricey at all.
I switched to synthetic oil (i used mobil 1, its all I could find locally) that was good for about 1-2 mpg, and the engine will thank you down the road.
As far as free stuff, the air box mod is it. keep your engine cover on, a warmer engine is more effecient, not by much but every little bit helps. I run 35# in my tires, you can probably get 40 safely but your not going to gain much and I'd rather not take that risk.
If you are really concerned with lowering your costs, don't do a thing to your car. I did the math with my exhaust (which I got on sale from crate engine depot [BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!]) and if gas stays at $3 a gallon it would take me 43,000 miles to see a return on my investment. but I like seeing that big number when I check my MPG and the car runs a little better too, so thats how i justify it.

So you think a Cavalier weighs 2400lbs??? LOL.

Before I bought the GT, I took the GF's base auto Pursuit for the drive to work to measure fuel economy compared to my Grand Am V6. It's a lot of stop of go driving and I averaged 18.8mpg which was considerably more than the Grand Am. Now with my GT 2.4, the same route over a week I averaged 22.9mpg. Has anyone else done a real test with both cars or will we just throw around opinions based on thin air???

I give it more gas than I should, and my MPG meter reads 21.8 right now. I've been doing a bit more highway driving lately too, as I've recently moved further from work.

i get over 30 mpg highway when i keep it under 60mph. and roughly 24.5 city with me driving like a bat outta hell

I get about 24-29 MPG in mine depending on how I drive.. Waiting for tuning to be available... Best thing to do IMO is to allow the car to breath a littl easier (Intake, Header, DP & Exhaust) then get tuning and you'll be ok.... I drive mostly city...

First of all, don't believe what the Chevy website lists. It has a habit of changing and I've seen the same car listed as a different weight on the Canadian and American websites.
