GM 2.2L Turbo?

I spoke to a buddy of mine at the dealership where i purchased my car. He said that they are looking to make a turbo available for the 2.2L instead of a supercharger.... anyone else hear anything about this?

The S/C is turned by the pulley system which is the only reason that it puts out slightly less power / PSI than a turbo would at the same rating but it's not a dramatic decrease. The motor has to use some of its' energy to get the S/C spinning but the advantage to this is an almost 0 lag time as opposed to a T/C since as soon as you hammer on the gas the S/C is already in motion and doesn't require a spool up period as in the case of a turbo.

A S/C is in fact typically more reliable and requires less maintenance than a T/C does but I think in the end it comes down to personal taste...if you're willing to spend all the cash I would hope you're willing to take the time to take care of it.

yea but to get back to the topic of this post if its made by chevy, it wouldnt void the warranty either, that would be pretty sweet.

If there is in fact a turbo in the works from GMP I would only have to assume it would not void your warranty. The build book for the S/C kit clearly states in large font that if it is not installed by a licensed GMP service department your warranty on the S/C and engine is null and void. Other than that your car is still covered as it was at the time of purchase and the S/C kit is also covered with a warranty similar to that of your vehicle.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that GM does in fact consider releasing a turbo kit for the 2.2L but until I hear an official announcement I'm not going to get my hopes up .

if they did produce it I doubt it would be anything special and they probably wouldnt produce a kit that would outperform an SS/SC.

well i know in the past, not gm but other vendors, produced more for the regular cavaliers or LS etc. then they did for the Z24's. there for the 2.4L z24 items were not only rare, they were expensive...

Ford did this with the SVT Focus. For 3k, you could buy a JR blower (same blower as 2.0 has), but it wasn't covered under warranty, and it only gave the car 30hp over stock. Since the 2.2 and 2.4 engines were not designed for FI, I seriously doubt it will be covered under warranty. And no, I don't think they will make a kit faster than 2.0..maybe the same speed, but not more.

I work in the auto business and when I called my local Chevy dealership and when i was on hold i heard that there was an optional turbo for the cobalt....when i got the parts guy on the phone he told me that he has no info on a s/s or a turbo and that the parts guys are the last to know anything. I am gonna go by the dealership next week and talk to my sales guy and see what the deal is.

Dealerships are full of crap, don't take anything they say as reality as most of us know more than they do.

The new turbo engine is the 2.0 Turbo going in the Solstice GT.

As mentioned there is the new Turbocharged ECOTEC that will be used in the Solstice GXP/Sky RL coming out sometime next year. They're more then likely confusing that with some sort of addon kit because a Turbocharged kit from GM sounds very unliek after they've already been develping a Supercharger kit for the 2.2L ECOTEC.

There is however the supposed 2.2L ECOTEC Supercharger kit that is in the Ecotec & GM Sport Compact Build Book, look in the "Engine Assembly Stock - 250hp" section.
http://www.gm.com/company/gmtunersou...build_book.htm
However the kit has yet to see the light of day. It had shown up in the GM system costing ~$2500 for a period, but was then removed and has not yet been put back in for sale. If it's like the pre-ECOTEC 2.4L Supercharger kit it might take a while to actually become finalized.

I bet if you started contacting some of the resources from that PDF though someone might be able to uncover something about it. It's pointless to talk to your dealerhsip because they're notoriously the #1 worst source of information about most things.
