Good or Bad Idea?
I am wanting to turn my 2.2L into a huge project, park it for a while and just dump money into it...I want to make a very nice and unique looking sleeper, so i was thinking about going and finding a wrecked monte carlo or something taking out the 3.8L supercharged motor and all the computers, etc and swapping it...then building up that motor, making my axles and tranny stronger...that would be first, i know a guy that can do this he already told me how it would work out... then working on my suspension, appearance inside, music etc, etc.

If you want a sleeper get an older lighter car to swap in a more powerful engine. Like a Geo Metro with an Eclipse turbo drivetrain. (From an old Sport Compact Car mag.)

I like the idea of a 2.2 sleeper. there is always a light grumble from the 2.0 guys saying they should switch bumpers witha 2.2 and make a nasty sleeper of it. but none of them would ever do it. if you could do it, it would be sick, having a monte engine in a cobalt
hahahah... rangerondubz has his new line... lol
me and my friends used to do this while drunk... its amazing how much you can convince someone to do with some alcohol and the words "you wont do it!!"

Hell if you can get it to work do your thing.... just make sure you do all the necessary research to make sure its even possible... and then if its feasible... if u get the bigger engine in but it adds too much weight it may take away from what you are tryin to accomplish... but if you have the cheese go for it

Get a Geo Storm for $1500, then get a Lotus Elan 1.6 turbo intercooled motor and swap it in. It has the same engine mounts and everything bolts right in.
You can also use the Isuzu Impulse 1.6 turbo intercooled motor which is the same as the Lotus Elan.
You will have a car that everyone will think is slow and Steve Lockett's Geo Storm can do 1/4s under 10 seconds. His is not just the motor swap, he has done everything to this motor to make it that fast.
In the end, it is a $1500 car with a $2000 motor, and many hours of your time.

No offense
but nothing you do will be unique...well fully unique. Engine swaps aren't anything new, Turboing isn't anything new and neither is supercharging.
Great thing about forced induction is that large displacement isn't necessary.
Like Halfcent said, if you did understand what was involved, you wouldn't do it...or wouldn't want to do it.
No matter what you do, you'll gain more respect and self pride in a completed project than a half ass attempted project.

okay so how much gain do you guys think i will get from doing a full engine build with probably 9.5:1 pistons etc internals, Garrett Turbo, full 3" exhaust, injen CAI? ill figure out something unique through this process...

You want unique? Ok try this... convert to RWD and dump in a twin turboed and intercooled Lingerfelter 7.0 litre aluminum small block chevy. Keep the exterior completely stock looking and run no bigger then 8 inch wide rear tires. NO one and I do mean NO one would expect an 8 second rwd street driven Cobalt!

if your gonna do a crazy swap like that why the 3.8? id do a 2jz swap if anything, same amount of work more power and a better motor, but its gonna be alot of work and money to do any swap in the cobalt,

If you go turbo CAI will not fit. Stick with bolt-ons until you have a better understanding of what you are doing.

and show me what transmission he can bolt up to it for FWD.
The 3.8L that he can get are from FWD vehicles, not RWD.

ha...i just reread what i posted and didn't realize that i listed the CAI... well i see all of you are pretty much suggesting to just leave it alone like it is...so ill just build up the internals and probably throw a turbo on it and an exhaust for performance... then ill just work on body and interior... thanks all
