Help! Going through oil like what!

So my brother has an '06 LS with a 2.2. Its progressively gotten worse and we cant figure out what is going on with this damn car. Its going through a quart of oil about every 2 weeks, doesn't leak a drop, but the rear of is car is covered in black carbonie crap. On a good day/week he only averages a MAX of 21-22 mpg.

Also, No CEL! only light/chime that comes on is "Airbag needs service"

He is sitting at about 120k miles.

Ideas, fixes, anything would be greatly appreciated!

We think piston ring but aren't 100% sure on that.

Thanks!!!

Have you checked where you spark plugs go for a VC Gasket leak? Mine was leaking there one time.

Ive been over and under his car a dozen times and cant find a single leak. The times ive been behind him, it does smoke, during acceleration but dont notice any while just driving.

Starts fine. Drives fine. Hasn't ever stalled that he has told me or any of the times I have driven it. No crazy dash lights or anything.

Has newer Delco Plugs.

Its just very odd... I haven't ever seen an issue like there where it was like "oh yup, thats the problem"

I find it even more strange there is no CEL. I pulled the coolant res. cap also and didn't see any oil. I usually do the oil changes on the car and haven't ever noticed any coolant substance in the oil. Based on that I dont think its a HG.

He bought the car about 2.5 years ago with 100k miles and it did it a little then and just has gotten a little worse consistently since.

Let me know if you have more questions or need more info to help. I appreciate anything.

Have you pulled the oil pan yet to inspect it?
Does the oil get a dark tint to it?

Pull the spark plugs and ck for oil on the bottom of the spark plugs if there is signs of oil your seals might be bad on the valve cover gasket. I know i had a civic that burned through oil real bad turned out i had to replace the vc gasket kit on it because the cup seals were shot to **** and it was fine after

Either your pcv is bad, which is part of the valve cover I believe, or your rings and of valve guides are shot.

On a side not this worries me a little, my cars at 102k and it needs to last me another 5 years or so...

I will check his plus on Christmas when I see him again.

BLKLS, sorry to worry you I know several people up over 150k without issues but for some reason my little bro's car has them. I have a strong feeling the car wasn't properly cared for by the previous owner. He paid like $3800 for it back in 2010 and the thing looked like it had 500k miles and was 20 years old... we figured it should be too bad, needed brakes, tires, endlinks, and a few things here and there. But hey, its only 4 years old so it should be good right? apparently not...

I will report back with what the plugs look like. Is the PCV in the same place as my LNF? or it is somewhere else?? I would like to check that also.

Thanks!

alright, finally had a chance to look at the car and all of the plugs are fine and look good.

But... I took the plastic intake pipe from the box to the intake off and it was covered in oil inside. I then flipped the butterfly valve in the TB open and all down inside is pools and puddles of oil... Im thinking it is coming from the little tube that runs from the valve cover on the passenger side of the car to the intake tube? could this be? what is on the other side of the valve cover on that, pcv?

Thanks!

Sorry if I skimmed through the banter, but have you looked at the air filter for oil(which is usually a sign of bad piston rings)
It definitely sounds like a pcv. It is possible the 06 has an orifice PCV if it is late build.

just do a compression test, redo with a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder and if the number goes up alot you know its the rings. all your doing at this point is guessing.

Take off the oil cap for a few days and see if it still does it.
